Default 'Iron Man 4'

Shane Black Unsure About IRON MAN 4 Return, But Thinks Downey, Jr. Will Return

The winner of our recent Iron Man 3 contest - in which we offered one lucky fan the chance to interview Shane Black and Drew Pearce - has gotten back to us with some highlights from their chat and they include some very interesting tidbits of information! Firstly, when the former was asked about whether he would be interested in working with Marvel again either on Iron Man 4 or another movie, he said: "Well, Marvel would have to ask me because they're famous for not working with the same people twice, and who's to say they would ever approach me so that's something we'll cross when we come to it." Joss Whedon made similar comments when The Avengers was released, so expect to see Black return if he's willing and if (well, when) the movie proves to be a success at the box office.

The British website London Evening Standard writes:

Robert Downey Jr. will return for Iron Man 4, according to the director of the latest superhero outing.

The 48-year-old actor has thus far refused to confirm if he will make another movie in the successful franchise, but director Shane Black is confident Downey Jr. will return for at least one more outing as Tony Stark/Iron Man.

Speaking at the Iron Man 3 UK premiere at Odeon Leicester Square, Black said: "I think he'll be back for another one. I'm sure of it."

Iron Man 3 opens in the US on May 3rd and in the UK on April 25th.

Well, Tony Stark is known for his wandering ways, so there should be an installment that focuses on female villains.

You and me both. I love what Marvel has done so far, and I can't wait to see what they have in store for the next few years. It's going to be very exciting.

Even from the trailers, I'm getting the distinct vibes that There Ain't Gonna Be No 4.
It's got that Dark Knight Rises feel where they blow everything in the hero's universe up to kingdom come, just so he can find some Ultimate Realization about himself, get back on his feet to finally shut up the "I will ultimately destroy your private life" boss-villain for personal accomplishment, and they can wrap up the trilogy with the hero finally getting some new techno-upgrade to match his newly rebuilt HQ and new realization about himself.

(Which makes sense, as Marvel wants to move on to finishing the other existing solos and start getting to work on that delayed Wave 2. Sounds like a good plan to me.)

Well, the movie ends with
[Show spoiler]Tony Stark destroying all of his armors
. However, we also know that he will be in at least one more movie, The Avengers 2.

Both of those statements make me want to curl in a ball and cry in the corner. I will be sad when he's gone and knowing it is on the horizon makes it worse.

But maybe he can just become Sherlock Holmes full time. The bromance with Jude Law may heal the wounds of a Starkless Downey Jr.

I doubt it; without having seen IM3 yet, he's a huge character in their line-up and easily stood-out in The Avengers. Marvel aren't the kind to wantonly throw-away what may be (and is) a fan favourite, so I think there are some legs left in the character yet.

My only thought would be that it's possible Downey Jr. may not commit to the role for much longer, and they'd have to find a way to replace him and for it to make sense in the narrative.

Downey's contact is up after 3. From his recent interviews it does not sound like he wants to come back (outside the core Avengers films).

In fact there was a recent interview with him where he half admitted he was doing it because it paid so well and since he was from a family of "artists" doing the same thing over and over was not desirable. So honestly I get the feeling he wants to move on. I support his decision and think its the smart move.

I agree. He will do IM3 and The Avengers 2 and I think thats it but I really hope he would at least do one more, Iron Man 4. Marvel will then recast after taking a small break maybe and introduce the next Tony Stark/Iron Man in The Avengers 3.
