China/Korean/Japan releases need to be avoided because they are simply too expensive, for no reason.

You could argue that SteelBooks or blu-rays are too expensive for no reason. Just stick with VHS.

Funny you say that because VHS movies back in the day were like $90. That's why all the rental places opened up. VHS movies were too expensive to buy so they rented them. And $90 in the 80s after inflation is worth double that today. So new, in today's money, VHS were a couple hundred dollars when released in the 80s. Hard to believe. Eventually prices fell. But movies like Ghostbusters and The Terminator were like $90-110 when first released.

I can't believe how low Blu-ray movies are now, many are cheaper than DVDs of the same titles. Grateful too.
