Hehehehe. okay.

Penton,
Many seem to question the benefits of having 2.0 BD-Live. Could one of the features be the ability to download subtitles for people whose languages get overlooked sometimes (eg. russian subtitles, hebrew, etc.)?

Yes it does have that ability, however subtitles are more often dictated by where the licensor owns the title, or as a form of region control, so it's not something that you'll see widespread use on

The biggest use I can see is so anime fansubbers can sub the official Japanese DVD legitimately, and after the company "blesses" their subs and puts them up on the right server, you can have your cake, and your fansub too, and everyone gets paid

-Ok, I'm gonna take three stabs at this one, here goes...

1. Animal House - "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

2. Airplane - "Picked a bad week to quit sniffing glue"

3. Spaceballs - "Comb the desert"

Penton,

There's a rumor I just read on this forum that claims MIB will be released on June 17. Can you either suggest it may have some credence or can you outright shoot it down?

EDIT - Nevermind, I see it was just announced.

Penton, just throwing this out there, but how are things patching up with Paramount and the rest of the neighborhood not that this whole mess is over? Are bridges being rebuilt, or is there still a lot of animosity over there?

Given one of the posts in the last several pages (I won't isolate which one, but Penton-Man undoubtedly knows which one I am talking about), I think I have a very good guess about the movie he is referring to. I don't know precisely which title it is, though - it's like picking a needle in a haystack. If I was forced at gunpoint to provide a guess though, I think I'd put my money on a certain very well-known and very well-liked film which is about 40 years old (give or take a few years).

Can't talk about why my guess is good, but I can say with reasonable certainty that the title in question is NOT any of the ones mentioned as a guess anywhere in the last few pages.

Hopefully this is suitably vague enough not to get Penton-Man in trouble.

P.S. Do not ask me about why I think I "know" what I do. I'm not an insider; far from it. Everything I'm referring to here in this post is pieced together from information publicly available on this forum, and that's all I'll say on the issue.

The movie penton is refering to is undoubtedly LOA. Thats my guess but all the complaining probably got back to the people who make the final decision and decided they didnt want to screw it up.

No paramount releases till june/july. They are still finishing up their contract with toshiba.

Universal is just choosing their new authoring house, they dumped the old one (and who blames them), and will begin soon (takes 1-2 months from authoring to a disc on the shelf, figure out the time frame).

Whoops, if im invading on your space penton, nuke away!

It's not Lawrence of Arabia.

I suspect in a few months that it might show up on some company’s website in a subcategory like “Work in Progress” or in some press release (like the Dalsa 4k camera bragging rights to the new Bond movie) so until then, mum’s the word from me…… because bids haven’t even been obtained yet for the work.
Work has been on-going on Lawrence of Arabia for over a year, and the above quote from Penton-Man rules it out as a candidate.

I'm sticking with my guess that it's Jaws in 2010, just in time for the film's 35th Anniversary. Should be plenty of BD hardware in homes by that point.

I don't think it's LOA as it's had a full and very expensive photo-chemical restoration, there are a handfull of shots that could use additional digital work but they would be minimal and comparitively cheap, there is also the addition of the missing Jack Hawkins balcony scene to be attended to.

It's not Jaws either, as film stock from that era is in relatively good condition, plus there were few if any matte shots requiring sfx post-production and therefore dupe footage. Additionally Bill Butler the dp is still with us and a working Cinematographer and so it would be he and Mr Spielberg, not Mr Harris, who would be called upon re: colour...

Gone with the Wind is a possibility as the ultr-res dvd release was done in 2K, if I were a betting man and it's one of Warner's title's i'd go for North by Northwest or Ben Hur as both need work doing to their OCN's and the majority of the original crew are no longer with us, hence the need for Mr Harris.

Ah, but both of those films have already been announced by Warner. So it can't be those.

My guess is and I could be completely wrong.

The French Connection
or
The Sound of Music

They've been announced as coming in 2009, that gives them well over 18 months to do the work, they haven't said January 2009...

Hmmmm. I don't doubt that the films you named could be the movie he mentioned below. I just think it's probably something that hasn't been announced yet at all.

So far, everything is hush-hush.

Having just watched a pristine print of Jaws in a theater, it doesn't look like Jaws would need much work done on it.

Well if I had to guess I would say Vertigo -- IIRC Mr. Harris was involved with the last restoration, which was all physical / optical / chemical (?)

Another one of my favorite movies.

Last minute save? What do you mean? How did Spielberg save them?
