Unfortunately, only the main feature on the Taiwanese releases are English subtitled. The bonus features are subtitled in Chinese.
Since I don't read Chinese that well, I think I rather stick to the US releases. But the Taiwanese releases are still a decent choice to consider since in the case of Only Yesterday, it has more extras than the Hong Kong release. |

They use the exact same encode as the Japanese versions both in video and audio. Where did you get these from? How much did they cost? Some other questions - subtitles or dubtitles? - how do the extras compare with the Japanese releases? - region coding? Last edited by Lnds500; 05-31-2013 at 11:03 AM. |

Both blu-rays contain English subtitles, Japanese subtitles, Chinese subtitles and Chinese dubtitles. For Poppy Hill, the Taiwan release has the Postcards of Concept art of the various Latin Quarter Clubhouse characters, the Yokohama Historial Guidemap, Storyboards, the Aoi Teshima Concert 360 in Nicofarre, the Aoi Teshima Music Video of Summer of Goodbye with Yokohama historical footage, and the Press Conference of the Theme Song Announcement. For Only Yesterday, the Taiwan release has Storyboards, the Making of Only Yesterday, and several trailers and other promotional material. Only the main features on both films are English subtitled. The bonus features only contain Chinese subtitles. Poppy Hill is Region A coded, while Only Yesterday is Region A and C coded. Compared to the Hong Kong releases, the Taiwan releases have more extras (probably due to Disney's role in the Taiwan Blu-ray releases), and compared to the Japanese releases, the Taiwan releases retain some or all of the extras (excluding physical extras in most cases since the Taiwan releases are in standard blu-ray cases). Thank you so much for this great topic...
Bitrate of Totoro's blu-ray in US ver and JP ver are different, JP ver has a bit lower bitrate. It is easy for me to buy from JAPAN and I think it has nice pack than US. Should I worry about quality? Is there any screenshot comparison between US and JP versions? |

I just purchased the Japanese Laputa: Castle in the Sky bluray and I took some pictures on how to find the English dub and English subtitles from the menu screen. Also of note, when you play the English dub you can't turn off the Japanese subtitles because the option is greyed out on your bluray player's pop-up menu

Well, that makes me think twice in terms of buying the Japanese editions. So you can't turn on English subs for the English dub? I thought about getting the Japanese editions so that then I can also listen to the Mandarin dubs.
I have Only Yesterday and Poppy Hill's Taiwan releases. Both of them have English/Chinese menus and any kind of subs (Chinese, English, Japanese) can be played with the audio. However, the bonus features were subtitled in Chinese only and you couldn't turn them off. Last edited by disneywildcat; 06-29-2013 at 05:52 AM. |

So, you can set the language and subtitles from the movie's audio menu (Japanese language and whatever subs are available), but once the movie starts you can't change them because of the menu lock out. And since the English dub is in the "Extras" menu it has no audio/subtitle options to choose from and just auto plays the Japanese subs that you can't change or turn off. It's not bad at all, it's just that you have to have Japanese subtitles on when watching the English dub. |

Why not just get the HK release? Turning on/off the English subs are not a problem for it, not to mention it would be cheaper than the JP version.

No, this is not true. Of course you can turn off the Japanese subtitles on the English language version. You just have to do it through the disc's pop-up menu. It can be accessed by pressing the "enter" button on the remote.

![]() Just to clarify, these are subtitles, not dubtitles. And did you check the region coding on your player or is that what is stated on the box? Quote:
The US version also has more extras. I haven't found a comparison of the 2 yet. Quote:
