The budget for this drama was more than expected and Warners anticipated 40% of the takings would be for the 3D release (when they were actually less than a third Warners said "female viewers are more discerning of 3D"). Mark Kermode said the film was like having the book shouted at you. The car ride is overdone to the point of absurdity and the wraparound is stupid but that's not to say its a bad film, DiCaprio turns in a typically good performance and the film is very much in keeping with Luhrman's others, so if you like those you won't be disappointed. If it induces some people to read the book, then its all to the good.

Nope, it was Luhrmann's choice. I don't doubt Warners were happy with the extra 3D dollars but it was his creative choice to film it in 3D. Looking at his previous films - especially Moulin Rouge - you can see why the format would appeal to him.

Whether it worked for the film or not is a different debate and one that varies to personal taste but certainly the reason it's in 3D is down to the director's creative vision for the film.
