It might not be depressing I haven't read it all yet. Maybe he had a good reason.

Former Star sports statistics editor, blogger commits suicide at Overland Park police station

August 16

A former Kansas City Star sports statistics editor and blogger committed suicide early Thursday outside an Overland Park police station.

Police found Martin Manley’s body about 5 a.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the station at 12400 Foster St.

“Martin was a terrific guy and a good employee,” said Mike Fannin, editor and vice president of The Star. “This is a real shock, just an incredible tragedy. Our hearts and thoughts are with his family today.”

Prior to his death, Manley detailed information about his life and suicide on a personal website.

On the site, Manley referred to owning thousands of dollars worth of gold and silver coins. Immediately following that reference were GPS coordinates for a spot inside the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

Police say they believe that statement is a hoax. They say his family told them that Manley had “gotten rid of” the coins prior to his suicide.

Manley killed himself on his 60th birthday. He had worked at The Star for seven years. He left The Star in February 2012 to start his own blog, Martin Manley’s Sports in Review. His final post can be seen here.

Manley also had published several books on sports statistics and was credited with creating the NBA's Efficiency Index, which is still used by the league.

Star policy is not to write about suicides, except when they occur in public areas, as Manley’s did.

I'm not sure why an Active Member is questioning a Blu-ray Samurai.

Oh so he was a Kansas City fan? Is that why he killed himself?

Never? What if someone has a terminal illness that has them in excruciating pain?

He had early on-set dementia. He didn't want to go through it, so he went out on his own terms. While I would never personally do it, I sympathize with his reasoning.

As far as my personal opinion, I cannot abide a suicide. It seems such a hurtful thing to do to your family and friends. It is the ultimate selfish act to me.

I don't think going senile justifies his actions but I guess it is/was his life so....

Yeah I agree it is selfish,I bump into their parents from time to time and even years later they are devastated, totally changed people who will never get over the loss of their sons.

We as friends drifted apart a few years before what happened due to changes in jobs, family situations and whatever but we were still friends and it still is hard to believe they are gone, one of the guys,Dicky was one of the funniest guys you could ask to be around and was always up for a bit of craic.
It's hard to understand.

I think anyone has the right to decide when and how they die. If this man didn't want to end up in a home, unable to recognize his own family and being a burden to others because he can't take care of himself...then i'm glad he had the stones to kill himself. Frankly, i'd probably do exactly the same thing.

I come from a country where euthanasia is legal, and spouses, kids of appropriate age or other close relatives are allowed to decide whether a person (in really bad shape, with little to no chance of ever waking up from a coma or state of vegetation, or even surviving through a surgery) lives or dies. I'm glad i grew up that way, and see the benefits of something like that. Here in the US, i see so many elderly homes full of people who themselves, don't even want to live anymore...but they're kept alive, and stuffed full of medication that only makes them feel like shit.

I ask myself; for what? Seriously, what good reason is there, to keep these people alive? The only thing i can think of is the selfishness of relatives, and that's not a reason to keep on letting these people live through their days like empty shells of who they once were.

I'm glad the ol' guy did what he did. He made a conscientious decision to end his life before getting to the point of "living" a meaningless life. Good for him.

Without regard that perhaps they are mentally ill, or are being manipulated by someone?

It's not that simple.
