I think that Sony is managing the pre-orders closely to avoid to have people walking in stores and not be able to find anything on the shelves in November.

I think they will open the gates at intervals when they know they have some extras at this point (for online pre orders like for Amazon), but also want to maintain a good stock for the launch in stores on Nov. 15th.

Yes. Everything I have heard through retail chains (admittedly not much) and from Sony suggests that they are doing their best to make sure that there is sufficient availability and that scalpers won't be able to take advantage of people.

But then again, the only thing I hate more than scalpers are the ones who fall for scalpers.

Sony has announced it's holding back PlayStation 4 stock to make sure it can replenish retail inventory swiftly throughout the holiday season.

In an interview with Fox Business, Sony Computer Entertainment America boss Jack Tretton revealed the company wants to make sure stock is readily available throughout the holiday season, so anyone who wants to buy a PS4 can do so.

"We want to make sure people can buy a PS4 on November 15 and through the holidays," he said. "So, we’re holding back some inventory to make sure people will be able to buy one.

"We can pre-sell every unit we can manufacture, and the good news is that production yields have been phenomenal. We're going to work very hard to make sure that every consumer that wants one gets one."

My only experience with a console near launch was the Wii.
Around 2months after it was released was the 1st time me and my younger siblings tried playing it at a cousins house. In the afternoon we tried to swing by a Target and BB and they both said that everytime they get a shipment in it doesn't stay on the floor for long.

That same weekend we went to a Fred Meyer (stores found in some west coast states) to do some grocery shopping and they had like 4-5 Wiis in their electronics section.

I'll wait though until I can order it from Newegg since it would save me $40 of tax

I'd be inerested to see if Sony can manage to keep supply running without any sell outs. I can't imagine that every single person that wants a PS4 can just get up one morning stroll in to a shop and buy one.

This latest interview with Sony is US centric, so I wonder if this relates to the rest of the world or just them.

I doubt that, too, but it may work out for someone who is persistent and does not give up after visiting the nearest BB or Gamestop. Who knows how many are allotted to some second and third line retailers? You might just luck out at Shopko Hometown.

yup, I think it is obvious that no matter how many they produce on day 2 everyplace will be out of PS4s, until they get the next shipment. So obviously there will be times and stores that will be out. I saw it more that they will constantly be shipping more units so that if you are really interested and go try several places you will have a chance of eventually lucking out and finding one.
