The PS3 can do an auto set up, if not you can check manually 480,720 and 1080i and the PS3 and TV will use 1080i -> 720 and 720-> 720. Then I'll explain it another longer way since this question seems to be asked a lot: There are 1080p Blu-rays and there are 1080i Blu-rays and there are 720p Blu-rays and of course there's the old 480i/p A HDTV display can accept either one or all (depends on the display) of: 1080p 1080i 720p and the regular 480p or 480i In the case of the PS3 it has the ability to play: 1080p 1080i 720p and the 480s Now this is the situation: If your display accepts all those, and you have checked all those on the PS3, it sends the program in the resolution the program is recorded in natively: 1080p->1080p, 1080i->1080i, 720p->720p, and the 480s->480s. Got it? ![]() BUT if your TV doesn't accepts all those, (or you don't have all those checked on the PS3) this is what happens: 1080p programs: 1080p not accepted on display or checked on PS3, go down to 1080i 1080i programs (or 1080p -> 1080i signal above): 1080i not accepted on display or checked on PS3, go down to 480 720p programs: 720p not accepted on display or checked on PS3, go down to 480 So for example, if your 768 x 1366 or 720 x 1280 pixel display accepts a 1080i signal you should have your PS3 checked on 480, 720, and 1080i. Your PS3 will send 1080p movies and games (and 1080i programs and games) as 1080i and your 720 TV will convert that to 720p as it was designed to do. 720p games and programs will be sent as 720 obviously. If you have a 768 x 1366 or 720 x 1280 pixel display that DOESN'T accept a 1080i signal, then your PS3 will send 1080p movies and games (and 1080i programs and games) as a 480 signal and your 720 TV will upconvert that to 720 as it does now with a DVD output. 720p games and programs will still be sent as 720 obviously. If you have a 1080 x 1920 pixel TV that accepts only 1080i the PS3 will send 1080p and 1080i programs as 1080i, and your 1080 TV deinterlaces that into 1080p x 1920 as it was designed to do. 720p games and programs will be sent as 720 and your 1080 TV will convert that to 1080 as it was designed to do. If the case the 1080 TV didn't accept a 720 signal, 720p games and programs would be sent as 480and your 1080 TV would convert that to 1080 as it does with a DVD output. Read rinse and repeat. ![]() Quote:
The important thing for an HDTV and the PS3 currently is to make sure the TV accepts both 1080i and 720 at least (Which an HDTV should, but some HDTV (a few) don't accept both.) (And of course all that DVI/HDMI inputs WITH HDCP compliance thing if you're going the digital conection route) Those links don't seem to mention 720/1080i on one, and the other says 720 but doesn't mention 1080i, so I would make sure first. |
