By type first, then alphabetically.

Types, in order:

Steelbooks
Criterions
3D Movies
Disney Collection
Slipcovered Releases
Non-slipcovered Releases
Digibooks
Television Series

... And I use the free shelf space to showcase my box sets. Works well for me so far!

Mine are by genre. Then favorites in that genre from left to right.

From left to right:

Box-Sets>Digi-Books>Steel-Books>Criterion Collection>Blu-Rays with Slip-Covers>Blu-Rays without Slip-Covers

Each section is alphabetical as well.

My collection is way too big to go anal on alphabaptizing letter by letter. If you click on my collection, that's exactly how it's organized.

Over 1100 titles are by first letter only which is still very easy to find a movie. But I do separate out my Digi's, Criterions, 3D, foreign, animations, boxed sets, etc. letter by letter off title. That's easy. I do it that way because it's still very simple to find a movie when it's set like this.

I've also had some blus gone missing so when I go to periodically check, I just go through everything off my listed collection from this site to verify nothing else has gone missing. Yeah it sucks something like this happens, but it has a few times.

Plus I buy a lot of movies (really?) and I just don't want to spend all that time sliding movie after movie over or down to fit the new one in. And with a family, they jack everything up putting them back anyway, especially the 10 year old. Can't expect that out of a child unless your a slave driver, plus it's not a big deal anyway.

I'm curious, what do some of you guys do when it comes to movies with a different name, but may also be a prequel/spin off, or even a direct sequel?
together in chronological order. so all of Romero's dead films are together, Evil dead, evil dead 2 and army of darkness are together... SW are together with a new hope as the first film

Quote:
For example, Avengers and all the tie-ins, like Iron Man/Thor/Captain America?
I've kept these separate myself, but I've thought about a few times actually putting them together, since they're connected.

Or what about something less connected, like Prometheus to the Alien series?
Or along with that, the Predator/Alien series and the AvP movies?
separate
Quote:
Lord of the Rings/Hobbit

Or even for some who don't have the Batman trilogy, do you put Batman Begins along with your other two Dark Knight movies?
together (categorized as LOTR and batman)

different media are separate

mine are by categories. The categories are mostly genres and sub genres and I split them up in to smaller sub genres when they get too big and don't fit on a shelf any more (for example I have Horror, but I also have Zombie type , animal horror, slasher and torture porn on other shelves. But there are some categories that are not genres (or subgenres) such international (none Anglophone films), fancy packaging (things like digibooks that can easily be damaged by kids), TV series and unseen (everything I buy- even if it is a classic I have seen many times before - goes there until I watch it and then it is properly categorized)

PS in each category except for fancy packaging and unseen they are in alphabetical order with series put together.

Please, anyone? I have just changed it (no pictures posted yet though) to have all of them stand up instead of stack on top of each other, is this a better idea?

If you look in my albums you can see on my big shelf that all of the cases/box sets are stacked on top of each other (I did this to save room mainly) but I just recently changed it so they are standing up next to each other (although it takes a bit more space) is either way better for storage or is it just preference or does anyone know what I am talking about?

If you mean vertically versus horizontally then I will always go with vertically as you see in my gallery. They take up less space and easier to remove and put back.

Yes that's what I meant, sorry to make it sound so confusing I have them horizontally and just changed them to vertically, but not sure which way I should have it, just seemed like horizontally it was putting more pressure on the slips/cases.

DVD's and Blu ray's separated and alphabetized, and multi-movie sets go on a separate shelf. Unless it's like Psycho 2, 3 and 4, that just goes under P. But a ten movie horror pack would go on the multi-movie shelf.

And then there are the big piles of stuff in the bedroom

it should not make a difference (as far as the disks are concerned). I think most have things standing because large stacks become unmanageable (i.e. pulling out a disk and they all fall or trying to put a disk back in the middle of a stack), also if they are lying down the space they take might not work as well (i.e. you can't change the width of shelves but you might be able to change the height from one shelf to the next more easily)

That's true as well, hadn't really thought of that.

Criterions (all formats), by number

Blu-Ray's alphabetically, "A" being counted, "The" not being counted

DVD's alphabetically, same way

VHS alphabetically, same way

Laserdisc alphabetically, same way
