I don't think there has been a single Blu-ray player introduced so far that will be $500, so far they are all way overpriced, think the lowest i've seen was $800 with the rest in the $1000-$1800 range.

As there has not been a release let's wait and see. It could well be that prices will be high until supply meets demand. Just remember if you by a first generation player you will be purchasing a 3rd or 4th generation when they become available, as they will have more functionality (most probably higher quality output) smaller and most probably easier to use. How many people do you know that still have a 1st generation DVD player still in use?

PS3 is a ways off still, acording to Sony it won't be released till november and a minimum price range of $425, I wouldn't expect to see it at that price though, at least $500 would be my guess.
