Default The Price Is Right: 12/12/2013 (Bob Barker)

Bob Barker dropped by TPIR on Thursday, December 12th to celebrate his 90th birthday. (The episode was taped November 5th.) I was a regular viewer of TPIR during the Barker years (he hosted the show for 35 years, from September 4, 1972 to June 15, 2007) and I sure miss seeing him as the host. Ah, the good old days/years of game show hosts like Bob Barker, Gene Rayburn, Richard Dawson, Ray Combs, Bob Eubanks, etc....

I'm guessing we're around the same age. One of my favorite shows was Match Game. I'm kind of bummed I missed this.

I'm 34 (July 27, 1979) so unfortunately I missed seeing most of the 1970s and early 1980s game shows during their original runs. Thankfully, Game Show Network (which launched December 1, 1994) was once an excellent network than ran 24 hours a day and specialized in airing the outstanding classic game shows from the 1970s and 1980s. Today, GSN is a joke, a pathetic shell of what it used to be, but from 1994 to 1997 (and again from 2001 to whatever) is was OUTSTANDING. That's when I became exposed to the classics that I missed from years past.

My favorites:

The Price Is Right
  • Bob Barker, CBS, 1972-2007
  • Dennis James, syndication, 1972-1977 (The Nighttime Price Is Right)
  • Bob Barker, syndication, 1977-1980 (The Nighttime Price Is Right)
  • Tom Kennedy, syndication, 1985-1986 (The Nighttime Price Is Right)
  • Doug Davidson, syndication, 1994-1995 (The New Price Is Right)

Match Game
  • Gene Rayburn, CBS, 1973-1979 (Match Game '73-'79)
  • Gene Rayburn, syndication, 1979-1982 (Match Game '79-'82)
  • Gene Rayburn, syndication, 1975-1981 (Match Game PM)
  • Ross Shafer, ABC, 1990-1991

Card Sharks
  • Bob Eubanks, CBS, 1986-1989
  • Bill Rafferty, syndication, 1986-1987

Family Feud
  • Ray Combs, CBS, 1988-1992
  • Ray Combs, CBS, 1992-1993 (Family Feud Challenge)
  • Ray Combs, syndication, 1988-1992
  • Ray Combs, syndication, 1992-1994 (The New Family Feud)
  • Richard Dawson, syndication, 1994-1995
  • Richard Dawson, ABC, 1976-1985
  • Richard Dawson, syndication, 1977-1985

My favorite was The Newlywed Game. Even saw it live once.

Bob Eubanks: Where is the strangest place that you and your husband ever made whoopie?

Female contestant: Uh, that would be in the Butt, Bob.

I'll never forget that one.

Definitely some great game shows growing up. I too, watched most of the Match Games again through GSN.
