Now I have the extended cut of the first film, I'll probably just wait for the Smaug extended release. And if I'm lucky it may pop up in next years Black Friday deals.

I'm happy enough to have both and have the option which to watch (which was a decision that came up more often with LOTR with the 30 - 40 mins worth of extra stuff in; 13 minutes in AUJ isn't exactly a dealbreaker time-wise) so will pick this up and then the Extended Edition later on.

I have to say I'm looking forward more the the DOS:EE than I was for the AUJ:EE as there's just so much room for expansion in DOS, especially in the earlier scenes. We will hopefully be getting a lot more of Beorn and Mirkwood in the EE which is exciting as they were two of my favourite parts of the book. Also hopefully more Thranduil.

I really want to pick this up on release date, but I think I'll wait for the extended edition like I did with the first film. It'll be tougher this time, but I think I'll manage

I thought this film was great.

Same here. I did the same with the TV series Breaking bad and Dexter, just waited for the series to be over, will do the same with Game of thrones. patience has its rewards (and saves space and money).

Hi peeps.

Just to give you an idea of what the EE could potentially look like I've mocked it up in photoshop. The purple is the same used for the deluxe edition of the soundtrack (like the brown/orange take from An Unexpected Journey)

Good call. I'd forgotten that the EE had the same color scheme as the deluxe soundtrack. I really like the purple scheme used for the soundtrack of DOS.

I think I'll get the theatrical release and wait for the Black Friday sales to pick up the extended one.

I think you've gotten the outer packaging spot on, well done

The only thing I would say is wrong is the middle art as they won't use the main theatrical poster. My hope is that, as the first was Bilbo, we'll get Gandalf and Thorin on the next two to make a trilogy of the main three characters. So I would guess either of these two images would make it in (probably Gandalf as he's more well known, to give audiences another film of Thorin before they put him on a cover by himself)

Cheers. I'll work up a character one later as it needs more work. The positioning of the title would probably be in the middle also. I'll go with Gandalf.

Brilliant, I'm curious to see how it looks as I think you might be pretty close to what we'll see next year in eleven long months time...

AJD, I hope the real US extended edition looks like that - I'll be waiting for the 2D only version to match my Unexpected Journey.

I think it will look like that minus the 3D.

I think I will pre-order this(3D)I only own the theatrical versions of LOTR and the first Hobbit so I don't believe there is much sense me starting to wait on the extended version.
I enjoy the films but they are far from my favourites and I just enjoy the theatrical cuts as they are.

I'd love it if they would add a statue of Smaug...

I'm astonished that it is up already! I'll get the standard edition 2D like I did for AUJ. This cover would be amazing as it is in my opinion the best suited poster. Then again that Gandalf in Dol Guldur one would be amazing too! I reckon that the 3D will lenticular shift between thorin in mirkwood and Bilbo in smaug's lair posters. Any of those three covers would work for the 2D version in my opinion although I do like especially the Gandalf one and the main poster.
