I don't think Disney would be so surprised. After all, Tangled and WIR were big hits. It's not like Disney's demeaning them because Toy Story 3 won the Oscar and Brave..... controversially won the Oscar, they're better than that.

It wouldn't be a smart move anyway. Sure it's successful but it could easily pull a 'Rescuers' and the popularity of the film dies out.

It could even pull a 'Hercules' and everyone starts to hate it.

I'd give it at least another 3 years before Disney starts considering it a 'classic'.

They were big hits to be sure but not on this level. They haven't had an animated film this big since The Lion King.

It's so nice to see Disney finding its footing again. Tangled and Wreck-it Ralph were really good, especially coming off duds like Chicken Little and Winnie the Pooh (which seemed like it should've been direct-to-video.) Meet the Robinsons and Bolt were ok, but I'd view them as the "training wheels" movies.

While I agree Chicken Littke is awful, Winnie the Pooh is a winderful little film and I find it much better than many contemporary CGI films that will all their spectacle can't match the simplicity and charm of Pooh. And the animation is exquisite too.

As much crap as John Lasseter gets nowadays, he really did turn around the animation department at Disney for the better. Gone are the dark days of Home on the Range and Chicken Little.

Same with TLM, I think they are shooting in the dark based on the same info we have.

The couldn't care less.

Their idea of a "Collector's Edition" includes having barely any extras (Ralph). Tangled was a huge success as well, that didn't help either.
Their idea of a "Collector's Edition" is a shiny slipcover and a digital copy

Works for me!
I love silpcovers, and I'll sell the digital copy. Win/win.

Oh...you'd be mistaken. A lot of people are surprised. Maybe they should have opened The Lone Ranger in the Fall and Frozen on July 4th against Despicable Me 2. How the fortunes of the year might have changed...

I love slipcovers too, and if the digital copy isn't strictly iTunes I'm on board, but labeling it as a Collector's Edition implies the inclusion of plentiful and worthwhile bonus features. Something that Disney isn't so good at outside of Diamond releases. I'm sure they'll put a little more effort into Frozen though, considering all the praise it's gotten. I just hope that they have a semi-extensive feature on the music since that was easily one of the movie's best aspects.

I hear you, but I gave up on the whole "Collector's Edition", "Limited Edition", etc etc... years ago. Like everything else, these days, it's just another sales gimmick.
Would I like more bonus content? Heck yes! Is it going to sway my decision even if it's labeled "Collector's Edition", most likely not.
IMO, next to Criterion, Disney has been so consistently good with their line that I will give them the benefit of the doubt on a few titles, that might be viewed as lacking.

well I don't think that's fair because the movies did very well on their own, besides The Little Mermaid didn't make as much as The Jungle Book (adjusted for inflation anyway) nor did it ever have the popularity of the subsequent movies and it still worked.

I called my Disney Store and they told me that the pre-order date for the blu-ray will be on January 10. So we should get some info either before or on that date.

Is this a joke?

Lone Ranger would have been off even worse at this time of year.

And Frozen wouldn't have the empty marketplace to dominate. As good as it is, DM2 would have stolen its thunder.

Well, to be fair, I think his point was that Frozen wouldn't have performed as well in the summer, so you guys are in agreement on that. I agree with this too.

I don't know if The Lone Ranger would have necessarily been worse off during the fall/winter period, but I agree that it certainly wouldn't have done much better. I'd say it was destined to fail at the box office no matter where it fell on the calendar.

Saw this today and I loved it. Glad to see Disney not forgetting their roots with musical animation movies.

As far Disney Animation Studios. I rank their releases like this-

The Princess and the Frog
Wreck-it-Ralph
Frozen
Tangled
Winnie the Pooh
Meet the Robinsons
Bolt

That could be said for any film though.

Well, of course. I didn't say otherwise. Frozen's run is really impressive no matter how you look at it, especially considering it is an original film.
