I've used them a few times, and never really had any problems.

Luckily, from memory, I've only ever ordered games, and the odd old DVD, neither of which I was that concerned about whether they were pristine or not. Nothing sticks out in my mind as being bad when it arrived, so I suspect they were 'ok'. Sounds like it's Russian roulette when you order from them.

Online:
Amazon UK (+Marketplace...good range, very reliable)
eBay UK (good for hard-to-find/OOS stuff but be careful as a lot of people just bid higher than they could pay on Amazon or elsewhere...enquire to sellers before buying if you're not too sure about specifics and you should be fine!)
Sainsbury's Entertainment (shutting down soon but excellent service...only iffy thing is packaging...great range)
Eureka Video (excellent, best service - delivery and packaging perfect) [Eureka titles only]
Arrow Films (pretty good, recently implemented rewards scheme, great for pre-orders) [Arrow titles only]
MovieMail (best selection online probably, at least for UK releases...fair pricing most of the time too)
Play Marketplace (frequently good price, slow dispatch/delivery but reliable and decent range similar to Amazon's)
Base (decent prices, basically works like an Amazon/Play marketplace store but often cheaper than their store on Play.com)
The Hive (excellent prices and wide range, support independent bookshops, slow dispatch/delivery unless you order to local bookshop)
Zavvi/TheHut (range not bad but actually one of the worse ranges and surprised they're as popular as they are...usually tend to avoid, sometimes a hassle with their customer service...only really use if I have a code)
WowHD (better recently but also not that great a selection, just sometimes good prices when they discount stuff for a day or two)

Have used Blockbuster online a handful of times who have been hit and miss. CeX once too but very poor service. Asda and Tesco have been alright, but I'd prefer not to shop with them too often (company ethics, personal choice etc).

In-store:
Fopp (when I can get to one...best prices, epic selection - only been to Bristol and Covent Garden stores but other ones have more selection apparently)
HMV (currently get discount, often cheaper than online with select items, decent selection of recent - great prices for new releases, especially niche titles which I usually get)
independent record stores (Rise Bristol, etc)

Avoid CeX unless you can inspect every part of what you're buying first. Even then they're not particularly cheap - often cheaper/more worth it to get it online for similar price/better condition.

Who do you think offers the best range of titles regardless of the price?

I recently made a order of 8 Blu rays and they sent me a DVD of a movie called 3 AM starring Danny Glover instead of a Sucker Punch BD. I emailed them 4 times and a week later they decide to reply telling me i need to post the crappy DVD back to them which is worth 1p before they will send me the BD i ordered.

i use this to compare prices > http://www.find-dvd.co.uk and you can set up price tracking too, so which ever retailer hits your target price first, you can go there.

Amazon all the way here. Can cross shop from the U.S. , U.K., Canada etc outlets (even more actually). Huge selection and availability. Delivered to your door, so much more convenient.

So much easier. Went to a big box store to find the New Remastered Robocop. Said it was in stock online in the store location. It wasnt in the store afterall. Waste of time, gas and headache.

Ugh. Guess going out to find the movie would be more healthy as I would have to walk all over the place finding the title and getting to the location.

Hah, but movies and exercise just dont go well together. Its a sedentary hobby Wait...lifting that gargantuan pop is like lifting weights right?

My experience with CeX online orders has been positive. According to my account I have had 4 online orders, including;
the 360 HD-DVD drive, 7 DVD sets, 6 blu-rays and 3 HD-DVDs (total of 22 discs).
All discs in good shape, all cases from good to mint condition apart from one DVD set (a CSI digistack) had a crack in the plastic of one of the trays (which I sured up with some tape) and they were all delivered relatively quick.

There will always be a risk with used stock, and/or human error in sending out something that is incorrect or not fit for sale. But you have the option to pay via Paypal, so worst case scenario you could file a claim there.

_____________

As for online stores where I get blu-rays, they include;

all your music (amazon marketplace, play.com, ebay)
Amazon.co.uk
Amazon.com
Amazon.de
base.com
direct.asda.com/
ebay.co.uk
ebay.com
grooves-inc.co.uk and/or grooves-inc.com
hive.co.uk
mg_and_m (ebay) aka mgandm (play.com) - they sell mostly South African blu-rays
play.com (essentially just like amazon marketplace now)
sainsburysentertainment.co.uk (until they go digital only at end of Feb)
tesco.com/direct/
thehut.com
uk.webuy.com (CeX)
zavvi.com
zoverstocks (amazon marketplace, play.com)

I'M in Ireland and after HMV closed it's been pretty hard to find blu-rata in suola. HMV reopened bere bit merged with the Irish version of Blockbuster and I believe Fraser using the UK HMV supplire so as a result their bluray stock is tiny compared to what it was. Ordering online is Tricky due to currency differences, postate costs and VAT issues avere a company is basse in the Channel Islands meaning ledere over €22 may incur a doorstep VAT charge. Amazon only deliver "for free" on orders over £25. We still have Tower Records but they're too expensive. This is the story in Dublin anyway.

My experience has been positive for the most part with CEX too. Only had one dodgy disc, and that was TimeCrimes on DVD a few years back. It was just over a quid, but I was still a bit angry. Other than that, most of the blu rays and DVDs they have sent out have come in good condition with some even coming with slipcases. Plus they deliver fast.

I recommend their service.

Worth reiterating this one.

I've had bundles of CDs, DVDs, BDs and books from zoverstocks and I can't think that I've ever had a single problem with them. Incredibly reliable. It's not uncommon now that I'll pay a little extra for an item bought through the marketplace to get it from them rather than someone else who I've not ordered from before.

Great tip/reminder DaveSimonH.

Zoverstocks is good until you try and sell some Blu's yourself and then their automated system keep's under cutting ya by a penny, the main reason I go for the next person if they have reliable feedback.

Luckily I've never sold anything through the marketplace, but that DOES sound annoying. At least you've solved the mystery (to me) of how they always manage to be within the cheapest few offers in the marketplace.

I imagine it would be annoying if you were a seller, but as as buyer it works for me. I prefer dealing with them rather than a seller with a handful of feedback. I've bought a lot of stuff from them, and on the rare occasion there is a problem their CS quickly resolves it.

Back in my university days when money was tighter than tight I was a little naughty listing fake items at 99p on play.com. zoverstocks within 30minutes would undercut and I'd delete my listing and pull the trigger of the cheap dvd. I thought at the time that writing in the description, scratched, hardly ever plays terrible condition ect then simply cancelling and refunding any orders that did come through with the excuse "sincere apologies but the item now doesn't work at all please accept this swift refund" would be fine. I ended up with 20-30 movies at £1 each but in hindsight it was a scummy student thing to do and certainly not clever. My account was suspended and rightly so.
