I use a PS3 and it bothers me continually. At some point I will need to either buy a new receiver (to replace my eighteen month old Sony with 5.1 analog inputs), or a new blu-ray player (with HDMI input), if I want lossless audio. This is definitely a "negative". |

Lets see were the PS3 is lacking in functionality/design in regards to Blu-ray. 1. Can't bitstream high definition audio ![]() 2. Can't be controlled by standard Universal IR remote WITHOUT buying an addon DONGLE. ![]() 3. Can't output Coaxial digital audio or analog audio -I guess it's optical, HDMI or nothing - that's very flexible ![]() 4. Can't put it in an enclosed AV rack or it may overheat or perhaps overheat other components due to the tremendous heat it outputs. The BD30 runs cool to the touch and emits very little heat. ![]() 5. Wireless remote costs EXTRA. Not included with PS3. I guess the game controller will work..... ![]() Just to use a Universal IR remote, you have to plop down some good amount of cash. That's added cost that some may have not forseen/expected. How can that be consumer friendly for those who decide to use/buy a PS3 for a Blu-ray player ? |

The idea that something is not a negative if it only applies to some people doesn't hold much water. By those standards any device, regardless of its flaws, would be "perfect" |

2. You make it seem like you cannot control the PS3 remotely at all, the PS3 remote is just fine for now. BT > IR, remotes with BT will follow. 3. HDMI is better than digital coax, optical or analog, the PS3 has both HDMI and optical.. its fine. 4. I have a day 1 PS3, no noise, no overheating issues. Located under my TV inside the stand. 5. Actually I prefer my game controller.. but I guess $20 is too much for you? How much is the BD30? Does it have wifi or ethernet? Last edited by Entertainment72; 05-19-2008 at 04:35 PM. |

![]() 2. You still need to BUY a remote if you wish not to use a game controller. 3. We all know HDMI is better but the PS3 gives no options for those who only have coax input for digital audio or analog inputs for audio. So, only benefit the PS3 currently has over a SA player is BD live. Last edited by HDPlasma; 05-19-2008 at 06:29 PM. |

How much better is the PQ/AQ from a high end SA as opposed to a PS3? Has anyone tried switching the two out on their high end equipment? I don't have the money for it, so I will leave it up to someone that is making better than a teacher's salary to try.

You get 3 in one. And what are the benefits of Panny30 that outweigh all that? Coax outputs? |

Yes, those other 'extras' are nice but how do they help those who buy a PS3 for a Blu-ray player ? Consumer who buys PS3 for Blu-ray player: "Hey dad, I can't connect the PS3 to the strero because we don't have optical or HDMI." "Huh?, it doesn't have a digital coax input or 5.1 analog outs to connect to our Sony receiver?" "Nope." "Dad, there's no remote so we need to use the game controller for the remote until you buy a special one made specifically for the PS3." "Huh?, I can't control it with our Universal Sony remote?" "I guess you can if you buy a special adapter from some online store." "Well, I guess no stereo for our Blu-ray movies and the game controller will do until I can buy a remote or one of those special adapters." "Hey, were's the component output on the PS3 ?" "If doesn't have one, you need to buy a special adapter." "I guess no blu-ray movie for use tonight." "Well, I guess we can watch blu-ray in 480i using the special composite output cable. "It did come with one of those right ?..........." Consumer who buys BD30 "Let's see..... connect coax for digital input or I can use analog outs." "Great, my old strero has both. I guess I'll try coax for now." "Wow, it has component and HDMI video outputs." ......<inserts blu-ray disc in player and enjoys his movie without buying anything to support legacy equipment.> Not everybody buys the lastest greatest AV equipment. |

I don't know how anyone can hate on a PS3? What other Bluray player is so much better at playing BD's? From my experience and reading reviews the PS3 is worth so much more than anything out there right now. I bought a Samsung BD-P1200 when it 1st came out and paid $700 dollars for it. I had issues with playability of discs and not picture quality. I could upgrade Firmware and no big deal. I got frustrated with Samsung slacking and bought a PS3.
Now when you upgrade the PS3 Firmware it provides you with so much more than any other player is capable of and I like the fact the PS3 only keeps getting better. I never would have thought I would get a PS3 and was only interested in a stand alone player. To me right now all the stand alone BD players are obsolete when they hit the market. The PS3 is future proof. My buddy has a Panny 30 and I can't see what the fuss is all about ? It certainly does not produce a better picture than the PS3 and I have taken my PS3 to his house and I gotta tell you and I'm not just saying it but the PS3 looked better. Without bickering...... what stand alone player is so superior to the PS3 and in what way? I never thought I would like the PS3 as much as I do and I'm not too stubborn to admit it. And to those who think the PS3 has a loud fan noise. You must not have a PS3 because you would have to be extemely close to even hear it. My TV's fan is way louder and can hear that and not the PS3. |

You know, If this thread had started out saying something like....."The PS3 is the best stand-alone player on the market for under $500" this would have been a very different discussion.
Most people would have probably agreed with you. Comparing a PS3 to high end SA players is ridiculous. However, if you have it in your head to go into a Best Buy and drop $400 - $500 on a BluRay player, you might as well buy the PS3. You get all the added functionality of the gaming/media center, comparable quality, and online software updates via wireless. Its a lot better to dip your toes in the water for $400, rather than spend $1000 on the Denon. BTW, for those people concerned about lack of analog / coax outputs on the PS3, the $1000 Denon only has HDMI output, which limits this to a smaller % of the population. |

That seems to be the whole point right of buying a Blu-ray player. Not a gaming machine capable of playing blu-ray discs. Yes, I agree that the additional ability to play games and other options are nice but how does that help someone who wants the PS3 for JUST a blu-ray player ? ![]() I just hope those who are lured into buying a PS3 are well aware of it's limitations on connectivity to external AV equipment. <Any family that uses a PS3 for their primary blu-ray player is asking for trouble fighting for TV time. "Just one more level." [This is at 8pm] "Junior, it's 9:00pm, time to watch the movie." --- "Just one more level..." ![]() btw: Isn't GTA4 available on the PS2 ..... |

COMON PPL, give PS3 some respect. Had it not been for PS3, blu-ray would not have won the HD war...
