Stray Dog still seems like a reasonable guess. I hope it's that over Macbeth.

I also immediately thought of Macbeth when I saw the clue at the bottom of the Criterion newsletter today, and it seemed almost too easy but then wondered how it could be since THRONE OF BLOOD already came out and Olive already released Orson Welles' version. I'd completely forgotten about Polanski's and would love to see that one again (especially in Criterion quality). I love the interpretation that it might symbolize STRAY DOG, however unlikely (maybe Criterion will re-use the clue when that comes out).

Incidentally DVD Planet has a current sale on all the older Olive titles (none of the pre-orders, sadly), so most are between $14-$18 instead of $20-$30. Orson Welles' MACBETH is included in the sale at the fairly reasonable price of $16.23.

This is a 100%, no wiggle room clue for Macbeth. Don't forget that the exact same line from the play was hinted at in the New Years drawing as well.

Roman Polanski's Macbeth would be great.

Akira Kurosawa's Stray Dog would be even better, though.

Paul Dano's Top 10 Criterion list is outstanding.

Stray Dog would be typical. I JUST bought the DVD a few weeks back.

Like all the non-Eclipse, non-OOP Kurosawa films, I'm sure Stray Dog will be updated to Blu-ray eventually. But this clue isn't saying that. At all.

EDIT: And there's a clear pattern of their Kurosawa Blu-ray upgrades:

#2 - Seven Samurai
#24 - High & Low
#52 - Yojimbo
#53 - Sanjuro
#116 - The Hidden Fortress
#138 - Rashomon

#159 - Red Beard
#190 - Throne of Blood
#221 - Ikiru
#233 - Stray Dog
#239 - The Lower Depths
#267 - Kagemusha
#319 - The Bad Sleep Well
#413 - Drunken Angel
#465 - Dodes'ka-den

Red Beard has the best shot at being next.

I really enjoyed that film. I would've picked it up yesterday, but I have already seen it and I think I'll just wait for the B&N sale. One of my favs of '13.

I can't get the intro sequence out of my head...so haunting!

After going to two different B&Ns, I got my copy yesterday and watched it last night. I agree, the transfer looks amazing. My first time seeing the film...truly bizarre and surreal. Not sure what to make of it, but it was an experience to say the least. I can't get the image of Liv running her hand through Bibi's hair in that night scene out of my head. I kind of wish Bergman played that clip after he showed Bibi finishing cleaning up the house and getting on the bus and right before replaying the boy in front of screen. Haunting scene! But, anyway, definitely a film that needs more than one viewing. I haven't been let down by a Bergman purchase yet! (Well, I'm not in love with The Magician, but it was decent) This must have been an influence on Lynch and Mulholland Dr.

The film is very similar to Amarcord, in my opinion, where we are taken on a journey with the characters in the film over x amount of time and grow and learn with them, until it all comes full-circle in a not so perfect, yet satisfying kind of way.

Amazing story, amazing cinematography, amazing film all around.
Wow, I can't wait to check this out!

Better than Frozen Scottie?

Well, I'd certainly prefer Stray Dog or Out 1, but if it was Stray Dog there'd be blue in the picture because it'd be an upgrade.

Have to admit I didn't get the reference to Macbeth, but it's clear as day now that it's been pointed out, good work guys.

Out 1 would be a huge coup for Criterion though. Has anyone seen the German DVD? Also, Rivette is surely the highest profile director to not be represented on the CC, right? I'm trying to think of any else of his stature missing but I'm drawing a blank. Paris Nous Appartient is on Hulu+, you'd have to think that's in line for a release in the near future...

I would totally be down for Criterion to release some of Asghar Farhadi's earlier works. A Separation and The Past are both listed high up there as some of the best films that I have ever seen, so I would totally be done for more films of his on Blu-ray.

Because Throne of Blood was already announced months before the New Years clue came out.

What a haunting scene it is!

I still have Fanny and Alexander, The Magician, Smiles Of A Summer Night, Summer Interlude, and Summer With Monika to watch.

Talk about slacking.

I think Summer With Monika will be my next Bergman BD purchase.
Finished watching 15+ hours of The Story of Film: An Odyssey on Netflix last week (it was decent), and that was a Bergman they discussed that I haven't seen. Peaked my interest.

Have you seen "The Virgin Spring"? It's one of my favorite Bergman films.

Also, I just looked up "The Story of Film" and it sounds really good. I may check it out.

No, I haven't, but that is right up my alley (I dig medieval period pieces and I love Seventh Seal). I've been eyeing it. Probably check it out on Hulu and wait for a BD upgrade.

The documentary is decent. He really covers all of world cinema, which is admirable, but because he covers so much the discussions of some films and directors can feel brief. Also, the narration is REALLY annoying...be prepared for 15 hrs of upspeak. But it is a decent intro to film art.

I'm not seeing the pattern, other than over time they've upgraded a larger percentage of their early spine numbers. That's a catalogue-wide initiative, though, and they aren't really going in order. It makes sense; why would you upgrade something like Dodes'ka-den so soon after doing a DVD-only release when you've got much older transfers that would see a greater benefit? Anyway, I'd guess Ikiru is next for Blu-ray upgrade. Totally agree that it's Macbeth and not Stray Dog in the clue, though.
