Germany Monte Walsh (William A. Fraker)

Monte Walsh Blu-ray REVIEW

The transfer is in the lower end of what I consider 4-star material, but the film looks lovely in high-definition. And solid release from Explosive Media. Super western!

Caught Monte Walsh on TCM last night. What a great movie! Great story (based on a novel by Jack Schaefer, author of Shane), beautiful direction, and terrific, subtle performances, not just from the leads, but from a who's who of character actors (Mitch Ryan, G.D. Spradlin, Bo Hopkins, Matt Clark, Jim Davis, Michael Conrad, Billy Green Bush). It's funny, sad, beautiful and tragic all at the same time.

I had seen Monte Walsh years ago on TV. I liked it then, but I don't think I appreciated how great it was until I was old enough to really identify with the lead character. I'm not a cowboy, but we all face the end of the road, whatever road we take. As Jack Palance says, "nobody gets to be a cowboy forever."

This is definitely on my list of top ten westerns.

Just received mine from Grooves and will watch it this weekend - films such as this are the reason I have a projector, I don't think I would enjoy it quite as much on a smaller tv.
