A quick note that Mr. Becker from The Criterion Collection has been invited to be part of the Un Certain Regard jury at the Cannes Film Festival this month.

President
Pablo Trapero, director, scriptwriter, producer (Argentina)

Members of the jury
Peter Becker, President of The Criterion Collection (USA)
Maria Bonnevie, actress (Norway / Sweden)
Géraldine Pailhas, actress (France)
Moussa Touré, director, scriptwriter, producer (Sénégal)

***
This would be a perfect opportunity for Mr. Becker to get the terrific thriller Reconstruction with the beautiful Maria Bonnevie in the collection

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts about The Great Beauty. I think that it's a tremendous film.

It goes without saying that Persona is perfect.

Great Owl, really intrigued now to see Out of the Past. Netflix is out of stock, so looks like it'll be a blind buy. Can't wait to watch it.

The DVD of Out of the Past can be found fairly cheap from third-party used sellers on Amazon. For a standard definition presentation, the DVD looks strikingly good.

If you have a little extra cash, though, then I would highly recommend buying the Film Noir Classic Collection: Volume 1 set that includes Out of the Past, Gun Crazy, The Set-Up, The Asphalt Jungle, and Murder, My Sweet.

Let me know what you think when you get a chance to see the movie.

I agree. In fact, there is a thread created for all things film noir for just these kinds of discussions (thanks to MifuneFan and his hard work). Talk about film noirs currently on DVD would be well received there too, and would generate some good discussions.

This weekend I watched Broadway Danny Rose, Ace in the Hole and a short film called In the City. The first two I've seen several times and they're terrific. The short is a film my brother directed. I'd share a link but the film isn't available online. It's only on blu-ray at the moment for those who contributed to the project. My brother plans on submitting it to film festivals.

I think it turned out well. It's only 22 minutes but I found myself wanting more.
The lead is played by Reynaldo Pacheco. You may not know him by name but if you saw The Beginners with Christopher Plummer than you saw him (He's on the left):

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

I saw a screening of The Third Man today, very interesting movie with some very strong acting from the leads. I thought this was the best way to see the movie since the criterion is OOP and I am not...what they call "region free".

I think I need to do another re watch at home to really get a better feel for the movie but it was different from other movies I have seen. Especially the pacing and editing which were good.

Hope this isn't OT, if it is please let me know and I'll delete.

Oh, buddy. I can't wait to see it this week, then. That is some high praise from you gents.

I've only seen Persona once, but it was a life changing film...Well, more of a aesthetic molding film. Montage and superposition is at the heart of of my artwork, especially my graphite pencil stuff, so needless to say, it blew me away.

I watched If.... tonight and I thought it was just okay. I was expecting a lot more from something hailed as positively as it is, but I ended up being extremely underwhelmed by it as a whole.

I guess I do have to applaud it, though, for showing what it did, as well as for being one of the earliest examples of school violence in form of medium. It was very fascinating to show how a group of rebellious individuals are actually pushed further off of the edge to their breaking points.

Was I surprised by what they did considering the amount of reports we see in the media on a day to day basis nowadays? No, but for the time it was shot in, it must have been horrifying.

Finally...

It's here!

Blue is the Warmest Color.

I picked it up at the library a few days ago and am about to watch it now. 180 minutes.

It took over a month (maybe two months) for it to arrive after putting myself on the wait list.

I will post my thoughts about this later today (Monday).

I wasn't aware that it was. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Yeah I noticed that all four films total to about 2 hours and 40 minutes, something that seems very possible to do in one sitting.

I also need to watch the Brakhage and Hollis sets. Watching both is going to be a *****. I don't see myself reacting well to them, but who knows.

And I wouldn't object to something from Pablo Trapero, Carancho was pretty damned good.

Is there a way of knowing when a criterion is going out of print? I don't want to miss out and then pay extortionate fees when OOP.

They usually make an announcement of sorts a few weeks before.

Yes, it's usually a press release of sorts that says that as of a certain date, the title will no longer be available.
