This happens every year. There's always several new shows that don't get picked up for another season. It doesn't seem like there's a larger amount of new shows being cancelled in 2014 versus previous years to me. Perhaps it's just that several you were watching/planning to watch didn't get renewed, so it feels more exaggerated to you.

Generally speaking, most of the shows that get cancelled get cancelled in May. That's when the broadcast network season ends, and the networks decide what shows are coming back, which shows aren't, and what new shows they're starting next season.
