I actually added that as I read the post by madlost1 immediately above mine where he names Code Geass as a mecha to check out, and I have to admit it meets most of the criteria I gave for a "mecha series" -- the special one-off machine designs of varying abilities, pilots loyal to "their" machines, the mecha prominence in the OP animations, the battle scenes. It really seems like a mecha show in ways.

But I tend to judge more based on what percentage of the series focuses on mechas themselves. Geass spent more time on politics, drama, and school-life comedy, making the series enjoyable even by people don't like Mecha -- so it's not a mecha in my personal opinion.
