Just got back from an IMAX screening, definitely worth my money to see it there.

Due to my excitement before this movie came out, I'm guilty of watching a lot of trailers and clips online. Because of this, I found my excitement for many scenes wane due to the fact that I'd already seen it in a clip, in fact, I'm surprised by how much of the film I recognized from clips & trailers. I definitely learned my lesson, and won't bother doing the same thing when Avengers Age of Ultron comes out.

With that said, I ran into the problem I have with many of my favorite movies, I thought it was too short. It felt like the movie was just barely getting going when they went to go meet
[Show spoiler]the Collector
. Before I know it, they're preparing for the final battle!

Nebula was definitely my favorite villain in the movie, Ronan was very forgettable.

I admit I did get a little teary eyed towards the end , but overall, it definitely lived up to my expectations!

9/10

I thought the after credit scene was very meh, considering this is the last Marvel movie before Avengers Age of Ultron, I was kinda hoping for at least a little teaser.

Well, I saw the film a couple of hours ago, and loved it. The humor was mostly in good taste, instead of trashy like 90% of sitcoms and films over PG now; I appreciated that. Here's some of my favorite moments...

[Show spoiler]1) The Nova Corps fighters creating a protection grid against Ronan's warship. It was an excellent visual effect, and showed that criminals weren't the only ones with a sense of honor.

2) Different characters often taking things literally, especially Drax and Gamora. I loved when Quill's about to kiss her, only to hav her attempt to kill him moments later. The whole "sticks in butts" confusion scene was hilarious.

3) The regrown Groot dancing to "I Want You Back" by the Jackson Five, while Drax sharpens a knife nearby. My mother, cousin, and I were all in an uproar.

4)Quill, Gamora, Drax, and Rocket sharing the Infinity Stone's power was a fantastic moment. I loved Quill's line to Ronan: "I told you, b!tch: we're the Guardians of the Galaxy."

5) Thanos talking to Ronan was also cool, but I didn't like how they altered his face design from the teaser at the end of "The Avengers". It was too human, instead of animalistic like before.

I don't think "animalistic" is the right word you were looking for. Maybe you meant more "alien" looking?

1.
[Show spoiler]Howard the duck? Really? Iron Man, Captain America, Star Lord, and Howard the duck? I heard the rumors beforehand but O wanted to throw up seeing him. Please tell me he won't be the next super hero to join the Avengers?

2.
[Show spoiler]So are we also to believe he was in the collection of the collector all this time?

3.
[Show spoiler]I vaguely remember the original, sadly I saw it in theaters. Wasn't he a bit, ummm, fatter than the scrawny version in this movie?

4. Will
[Show spoiler] Nebula be in any future movies? I was looking forward to seeing Karen Gillan as Nebula after meeting her at a recent convention and for being a fan of hers as Amy from Doctor Who. But Nebula was only in a few scenes. Bummer! Is she supposed to be a robot or something?

5. Wish for a return to post credit scenes that were meaningful. It's. To worth staying if the scene is pointless.

Was this filmed in IMAX? If not, is there any real advantage? I saw it in standard 3d. Sitting in the second row the screen was pretty big. Seeing movies with scenes filmed in IMAX makes sense to see in IMAX but if not, what's the point?

Awesome Sauce!

From Variety:

Quote:
‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Soars to Biggest Thursday Box Office Opening of the Year

Who needs Iron Man?

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” got off to a rousing start on Thursday, rocketing to $11.2 million in late night preview screenings. That’s the biggest pre-opening total of the year, besting another Marvel title, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s” $10.2 million start in April. Roughly $1.9 million of “Guardian’s” initial haul came from Imax screenings.

Despite lacking a top-shelf superhero in the form of Captain America or Thor, the comic book adaptation is on track for the biggest August opening in history, topping “The Bourne Ultimatum’s” $69.3 million bow. It is expected to premiere to north of $75 million, but could soar even higher given that “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” debuted to $95 million this spring and this film is hitting loftier numbers.

The film is a record-breaker in another sense. It will have the widest August opening in history when it expands to 4,080 theaters on Friday, nearly 3,200 of which are in 3D, carrying with them surcharges. Overseas, the film will debut in 42 international territories including the United Kingdom, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and South Korea. The picture carries an $170 million production budget.

Overseas, the film is off to a strong start, racking up $2.3 million in the United Kingdom and Ireland, nabbing $3.5 million in Russia, and generating $1.6 million across several South and Central American countries such as Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.

James Gunn, a habitué of the indie and horror worlds through such films as “Super” and “Slither,” directs the film about a rag-tag group of space cowboys. Chris Pratt, best known for his comedic turn in “Parks & Recreation,” should enjoy a nice career bounce for his work as the Han Solo-esque, Star Lord. The picture’s mix of laughs and spectacle has been hailed by critics — it currently enjoys a 91% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The weekend’s other wide release, Universal Pictures’ James Brown biopic, “Get on Up,” grossed an estimated $371,000 when it screened Thursday in 1,769 locations. It is expected to make between $12 million to $14 million when it expands to 2,466 theaters on Friday.

The Guardians and the “Godfather of Soul” will find a summer box office that has been decimated by too many blockbusters that weren’t. Domestically, ticket receipts are down 20% from last year. Exhibitors are clearly holding out for a hero, to paraphrase the great Bonnie Tyler. It looks like one just arrived in the form of a wise-cracking raccoon and a talking tree.

Just came back from an IMAX 3D showing, and loved it!

It was everything I never knew I needed from a Marvel movie.

Tied with TWS as my favorite P2 film and tied with both TWS and Avengers as favorite MCU film.

It was not filmed in IMAX or 3D but was filmed with both in mind (as in, the end product).

So the IMAX 3D version has a bit of an exclusive not seen in the other formats: it has shifting aspect ratios throughout the film (most of the outdoor space scenes are in full IMAX ratio while indoor scenes are in standard widescreen).

Gunn himself has overseen both the 3D conversion and IMAX version, as he stated "Unlike many directors, I've been actively involved with converting every shot to 3D, making sure it works perfectly for the story and the film, making sure it's spectacular and immersive without being silly, distracting, or overly showy" and in regards to the IMAX 3D version: "[it would] make the viewing experience even fuller and more encompassing. I've personally chosen all the places where the changes occur... The changing aspect ratios in this case are actually a part of the storytelling."

Guardians is an amazing standalone film for the MCU. GotG accomplishes the feat of what phase 1 and the avengers (2008-2012) did for the MCU in a single film. By establishing the characters of the Guardians and elevating them to an ensemble of super heroes. Marvel has created a joyous cinematic experience to compliment and rival its counterpart MCU films.

Unreal that this could walk away with $90mil for the weekend, more than The Dark World, which benefitted of course from the "Avengers bump."

Watched it earlier today and loved it! A great blend of action, heart, and comedy! Was great to
[Show spoiler]actually see Thanos on screen, although I thought they might hold off on a full reveal till later.
Regarding the after-credits scene,
[Show spoiler]I was hoping for some kind of tease for something coming up, but it was still a funny, enjoyable scene, a great cameo, since he is a Marvel character.
