Also, might be worth checking your PS3 settings in the audio bit, make sure that you have the 5.1 options ticked.

On my PS3 it's not possible to UNtick the 5.1 option (nor the 7.1 option for that matter). It's greyed out. I have the new Sony STR DG820

Again for other stereo sources on the PS3, it expands to surround just fine. And for stereo sources coming from my PC (also being output in PCM), it expands to surround just fine. It's only when doing MP3s on the PS3 that there's a problem.

When you say HDMI, you mean you use HDMI for the audio right, not merely for the video? Just making sure.
