A film that has already been released onto DVD that sold well will not be the opener of floodgates. New titles will do that. Wait for Ironman or The Dark Knight to come out and set records. It will happen, oh yes, it will happen.

I don't think it will open the floodgates. I do think that it will be a bestseller for a while because come on its the GODFATHER. Iron Man and The Dark Knight will definitely sell a ton.

I think one or the other of these films will likely do for Blu-Ray what Matrix did for DVD. Possibly even Crystal Skull.

It'll open the floodgates only in the sense that anything that increases blu adoption is going to make big catalog releases more enticing to studios. But as has been said already, titles like Transformers, TDK, Indiana Jones and Iron Man will ultimately drive sales of hardware.

All things considered, I'm quite pleased overall with the number of quality catalog releases we've had this early in the adoption cycle, with LOTR all but confirmed for next year as well. This holiday season should be the push most studios need to breakdown and release the vast majority they've been holding off on.

I don't think The Godfather is going to set any sales records for Blu-ray.

Certainly the first two Godfather movies are undisputed classics. They are truly great movies. However, I think the crowd that buys those discs will mainly be made up of baby boomers and others who were around when the movies were released in the 1970s. Some dedicated film fans will also collect the discs.

I don't think The Godfather is going to sell very well to viewers under the ages of 30, maybe not even under 35 either. Some younger adult viewers will buy it, but I think they'll be part of the "dedicated film fan" group.

I'm probably going to buy the new BD box set. I bought the previous DVD box set of The Godfather.

To truely open the floodgates for bluray IMO would take a studio releasing a major blockbuster, say Batman 3 (whatever it will be called) or Transformers 2 on bluray FIRST, even a few weeks earlier than the DVD release. At this time, as popular as it is, bluray is still seen as a luxury to most people. When it is shown by an early release by a studio, it will show people that it is the wave of the future and not such a luxurious purchase. My partner at work and his wife, no matter how many movies my wife and I show them on blu, still think its a "fad" for technogeeks and I know several others with the same mindset.

Nope. Movies like Transformers, Iron Man, Wall-E, Finding Nemo, Incredibles etc will open the floodgates. Godfather is simply not suited for current generation audience.

I personally think the Godfather movies will only have decent sales on Blu-ray.

this is a movie that I guess all movie collectors want to have and I guess I will buy it at some time. But this is not the kind of movie that u take out to have some fun.

So will buy it but don't know when.

Maybe 1 and 2 but not 3 and 4.

I think it all depends on sales. If they sell a boat-load of them maybe others will test the waters. Personally, I don't think the classics (not this genre anyway) will sell a huge number of copies until the install base is much larger (and probably more diverse). Guess we'll see though. Should be interesting to see what the studios consider a success.

I think the Godfather will sell a ton even at that price tag and I also believe that it will take time for other classic to come out in BD, most studios will look at the sales of this movie and judge what to release or not.

Quality instead of quantity

I don't think TGF is a great basis for catalog sales if we are hoping to get LOTR or Star Wars or Gladiator, etc.

TGF is a very different genre than those catalogs IMO, and won't be a great indicator of how "sci fi" epics will sell.

Now analyzing the sales numbers for TGF and projecting sales of other classic drama catalogs is a much more relevant parallel to draw IMO.

On a side note, I hope TGF sells very well, but I have this gut feeling it won't do as well as we hope.

I don't believe this will open the Floodgates as its also being released on DVD. Now if this was a Blu-Ray only release then I would have to agree it has the potential to open them.

I hope Scarface gets released on Blu, will definitely get that.

I've had the Godfather DVD boxset for about 5 years and will DEFINITELY get the Blu-ray trilogy. Not sure what to do with my current set.

The thing Godfather WILL do that alot of other titles(Iron Man, Transformers, Batman) don't even if it doesn't sell as much, is make people buy blu ray
players if they don't already have one.....

this is like Halo or GTA coming out on one system, There are people
who could really not of given a sh*t about blu ray that are older and have $$$, that now that this is coming out are going to blu up....
