Ant Man is another one of these few examples, the grading is very cinematic and looks far apart from anything made for TV, it is shot exceptionally well and the cinematic texture looks sharp and precise but far more natural than any TV show. TV shows vary the cameras and do some bizarre shot types for effect and quality changes, just look at AOS season 1's finale in some places for examples of that. To be honest if a film is made well and cinematic, it should look fine in any aspect ratio. I have to say i liked the large frame for Ant Man, there was so much raw detail and information especially in the shrinking scenes that i fear a widescreen aspect ratio wouldn't have been able to capture as much as the shot sizes would be different. Thats just my two cents on the matter. In my opinion it is the decision of the cinematographer and the Director to decide the aspect ratio for THEIR film, and our duty as cinema goers to respect their wishes, if this is how they intended we see the film then there's a reason for that and we should respect their decision.
I don't think it is always up to the director. Maybe networks like hbo tell the directors how they want content filmed.

I watched the French BD 2 days ago, and unfortunately, I had to amp up the sound just like on Avengers Age of Ultron.

The track was an English DTS HD MA 7.1 48/24 which I suspect should be the same almost everywhere worldwide.

AQ was good overall, but only once I increased dramatically the volume compared to how my receiver is usually set up.

I haven't tested any of the other tracks though, will try today to have a look at them.

Had not thought the issue would repeat itself but guess it shouldn't come as a surprise.

I received my copy of Ant-Man yesterday and planned to watch it later so will report back my findings later.

The very first moments didn't make me realise that, but the first sequence has people speaking in a quite normal manner (meaning they're not shouting nor whispering) and I had to increase my volume dramatically.

I thought it was just his sequence but actually, I had to watch the whole movie like that because the action sequences also needed this increase of volume.

To give figures, I have a PS3 linked to a Yamaha RX-V467 + some Jamo HC S606 speakers (and a Jamo Sub210). I had the opportunity yesterday to check my HT through the Spears & Munsil BD. At 0dB on my Yamaha, I have a 75dB reading on my (hey, I do with what I have ! ) Samsung S4 SPL.

My standard setup on the Yamaha is -32.5 dB. It is not unusual to increase to -30 or -27.5 while watching a movie, but never more.

In the case of Ant Man, I watched the movie at -20dB (and I probably could have increased it to -17.5dB).

If I had to watch Tron Legacy or Star Trek Into Darkness at this level, this would be probably hurtful for my hearing.

Note however that I only have a 5.1 setup, so there is a downgrade step done by my Yamaha which can generate some differences. However, there are many 7.1 tracks I've listened to which didn't had such issues at all (including some Atmos tracks like American Sniper which sounds awesome).

Nowt wrong with 7.1 track on the UK 3D disc. Watched it this morning & it was fine compared to AOU, that I had to crank my receiver right up.

Didn't see this posted yet, but sorry if it has been. Here's an unboxing video of the 3D release. The slipcover is embossed, not lenticular.

I'm glad to see it appears Ant-Man is coming in a black case. I wonder if it's going to be a new Marvel thing now, releasing the films in colored cases, after Avengers: Age of Ultron came out in red. I really wouldn't mind that.

I can't believe that it's only a week away now. It feels like I just saw this in the theater yesterday. Definitely cannot wait to rewatch it.

Is there an explanation for why Disney is so weird with their Marvel releases?

- There's no Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital combo pack.
Only DVD, Blu-Ray, and the 3D Blu-Ray/Blu-Ray/Digital

- A slipcover and a digital copy are only available with the combo pack that's has the damn 3D disc that barely anyone wants.

- The amount of extras is piss poor, but the sets are still pricey

No other studios does this with their releases or Disney with other Disney releases.

the Atmos theatrical mix was actually one of the best from Marvel - sadly not included on the bluray edition (god I hate you Disney Home Video).

You can take this with a grain of salt, but I once read it was due to their recent policy change on PG-13 films. So I took it as legit, because once Disney fully took over the Marvel films with Thor: The Dark World, that's when the changes happened.

Despite the Disney buyout happening before their theatrical releases, Iron Man III and The Avengers had a combo pack & 2D slipcover due to the deal Marvel still had in place with Paramount, which was unaffected by the Disney transaction as part of their original five-picture distribution deal.

You could also see these changes with Disney's list of live-action films as Saving Mr. Banks (PG-13) didn't have a blu-ray/DVD combo pack either (but I believe it came with a slipcover). Yet, if you look at their Pixar films, the recent Aladdin release or recent live-action Maleficent, Cinderella, Tomorrowland, etc all of which were rated either PG or G, they all were released on blu-ray in combo packs and with slipcovers. PG-13 releases: Pirates franchise came with slipcovers & combo packs. So did John Carter as well as that Lone Ranger flop. But all of these were right before the Thor: Dark World / Saving Mr. Banks theatrical releases, which again would give us a timeline of when this policy went into effect. So...

As you, I've absolutely no interest in 3D releases, so come Star Wars Episode VII's blu-ray release, Disney hopefully will rethink these decisions and release the blu-ray with a 2D slipcover. Or I'll be doing what I've done with these Marvel releases and swapping covers. And a combo pack would be nice as well so as to still have a DVD, as I've kept my Star Wars DVD releases. Would be nice to put the DVD in an empty case and whip up some artwork and put it on the shelf with the others.
