Finally was able to see the set in person last week. It's a beautiful looking set, despite all the problems I've heard about. They had 2 copies, both in seemingly perfect condition. It was just a bit too much, especially for a show I already have multiple copies of. I have the Complete Series deluxe set with the wooden case and the indiviual season steels from Best Buy, but I do love the steelbook boxsets they've been putting out recently. I wasn't burned by the final season like most were, so I wouldn't mind having another copy, I just don't think my wallet or quickly diminishing shelf space would like it.

And yet, they can't be bothered to come out with a Phase Three set, after releasing Phase One and Two sets.

On November 3rd 2020 HBO/Warner Bros released the entire Game of Thrones series on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. One of my family members enjoys this TV series and it is one of their favorite TV series. Game of Thrones is one of the most popular modern TV series every made. This series is professionally upscaled to 3840 x 2160P by the studio. The series is in Dolby Vision HDR with lossless 13.1 Dolby Atmos surround sound. Best Buy ordered a total of 7,600 limited edition 4K Ultra HD steelbook boxsets and it is my understanding that they have almost completely sold out. When the Best Buy steelbook edition is sold out one can still purchase the standard 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray packaging style which contains the exact same 33 Blu-ray discs. I am not sure how many of the standard 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray packages were made, perhaps it might be somewhere around 30,000-50,000+ copies made.
*** Important mature content information *** I watch all kinds of TV series and movies. Once and awhile at Blu-ray.com I post information about family TV series and movies from time to time like Little House on the Prairie on Blu-ray. It should be mentioned that the Game of Thrones series while being one of the most popular TV series that aired on the premium Home Box Office cable/satellite TV channel, also contains mature content that some people really like or dislike according to their worldviews on such content. The Game of Thrones TV series has some language and bloody violence with a higher amount of nudity and sexual situations when compared to some TV series. People have different worldviews, and one of the reasons this HBO TV series is so popular is because it has mature unrated content that would most likely get a R rating if it was submitted to the MPA for a rating. Quality stories, acting quality, and production quality is the most important thing in a TV series, however after those factors, some people like the mature content that HBO, Showtime, and Starz offer in their premium cable/satellite TV series that is not seen on basic cable or a regular network TV series. Many actors starring in some TV series and movies believe the human body is beautiful, therefore many actors purposely sign up for roles that contain nudity since in their worldview they believe nudity is beautiful and makes the TV series or movie more realistic for the character they are playing in a certain scene. This fictional Game of Thrones TV series has excellent quality stories, and acting that takes place in a fantasy world on a planet somewhere in the Universe that is similar in some ways to the middle ages on earth. However, in this fictional Game of Thrones series that takes place on a fantasy world, the religions of the 7 kingdoms and the entire series is very different when compared to the religions of the planet earth. The Game of Thrones series is made up of many different religions that believe in several different gods, etc. This is the second time I have seen the Game of Thrones TV series including all the extra features. Before Nov 3rd 2020 the best way to watch the Game of Thrones series was on the standard 1080P Blu-ray format for seasons 2 through 7 since only seasons 1 and 8 were offered on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. All 8 seasons of the Game of Thrones were offered in lossless 13.1 Dolby Atmos even before this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray boxset came out. The advantage of the Game of Thrones 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray boxset is that the entire series has been professional upscaled to 2160P (4K) by the studio and encoded with Dolby Vision HDR. So I have now seen the Game of Thrones a second time (once in standard Blu-ray and once on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format). However due to limitations to my equipment I was not able to experience Dolby Vision HDR, 4K, or Dolby Atmos 13.1, and the image was downscaled to 1080P at standard dynamic range with lossless 7.1 Dolby TrueHD core audio. The high bit rate HEVC codec is better quality when compared to MPEG-4/AVC and VC-1 codec. The Game of Thrones TV series on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format is reference quality when it comes to bonus material (A+) This 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray series is an excellent low price value since it literally takes several weeks to see all the bonus features (some people it will take several months) There is a massive amount of full length audio commentaries for this series and all the commentary tracks use lossy 5.1 Dolby Digital (it is rare to have a commentary track in 5.1 Dolby Digital, several other TV series and movies generally use lossy 2.0 Dolby Digital for commentaries). I always watch all the extras for all the Blu-ray discs that I and my family members own. All the excellent commentary tracks were ported over from this standard Blu-ray to this 4K Blu-ray boxset. Many episodes have 2 fully length commentary tracks and some episodes have 3 full length commentary tracks. So, if one wants to see and hear everything on the 4K Blu-ray disc they have to watch some episodes a total of 4 times. Plus there is a massive amount of high quality bonus material. Years ago HBO had a contract with Target stores to offer exclusive Blu-ray bonus content for a certain period of time. The good news is that many of the Target exclusive bonus content has been ported over to this 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray boxset. However, one will want to keep their Target bonus Blu-ray discs since some of the exclusive content has not been ported over to this 4K Blu-ray boxset. I never owned the Walmart exclusive bonus discs, and there is a possibility that the Walmart Game of Thrones content might have been ported over to this boxset also (but I am not sure). Some of the bonus content I remember seeing before but other content appeared to be brand new material that I had never seen before. There is no native 4K bonus material, all the bonus material uses the MPEG-4/AVC codec at mostly 1080P quality and sometimes 1080i quality. Some of the bonus material is in 5.1 DTS-HD Maser audio or 5.1 Dolby TrueHD with a Dolby Prologic matrix flag. Many of the bonus material uses lossy Dolby Digital or lossy DTS. It will take a person literately several weeks to see and hear all the bonus content, and some people it may take several months depending on the speed they travel at going through this fictional TV series. Excellent quality audio commentary tracks and many other bonus content. It is a lot of work to make TV series and movies. Some actors, and other crew members spent up to 8 years and sometimes up to 10 years of their life to make this TV series. 10 to 18+ hour days and 60 to 80 hour weeks for up to 10 years of their life was spent making this TV series. There were several hundreds of crew members hired for this series and literally over 8.5 million hours was spent making this series over the last 10 years. Watching all the bonus features one starts to understand the hard work that went into making this 8 season of Game of Thrones series. Also a lot of work and hours went into making all the bonus content for this Blu-ray series. A total of 33 Blu-ray discs in the boxset (23 100GB discs, 7 66GB discs, 2 50GB discs, and 1 25GB disc). Season 8 Best Buy steelbook uses poor case style where 6 discs are stacked on each other in groups of 3 (3 on the left and 3 on the right). Discs in season 8 can be scratched or damaged easier since they make physical contact with each other and one has to pull out all the discs to get access to the bottom disc. However, Seasons 1-7 have normal case storage styles from Best Buy steelbook and discs are not stacked directly on top of each other (no physical contact with each other). Game of Thrones (4K Blu-ray Best Buy steelbook information) Same exact 33 discs are also in the standard packaging style Disc 1 92.3GB DISC 2 93GB DISC 3 92.9GB DISC 4 54.1GB Season two Disc 1 91.1GB Disc 2 91.9GB Disc 3 92.6GB Disc 4 57.1GB Season three Disc 1 90.8GB Disc 2 91.1GB Disc 3 90.4GB Disc 4 61.7GB Season four Disc 1 92GB Disc 2 90.2GB Disc 3 92.7GB Disc 4 59.4GB Season five Disc 1 88.3GB Disc 2 88.4GB Disc 3 88.2GB Disc 4 58.3GB Season six Disc 1 89.6GB Disc 2 87.3GB Disc 3 90.4GB Disc 4 56.8GB Season seven Disc 1 91GB Disc 2 89.9GB Disc 3 58.2GB Season eight Disc 1 91GB Disc 2 86.5GB Disc 3 84.4GB Bonus Disc 1 44GB Bonus Disc 2 45.6GB Bonus Disc 3 13.6GB Target exclusive Blu-ray bonus disc information that was bundled with the old standard 1080P Blu-ray discs Season 2 7.2GB Season 3 20.4GB Season 4 4.93GB Season 5 3.98GB Season 6 2.90GB Season 7 (Disc 1 6.66GB), (Disc 2 13.6GB) Target exclusive bonus content was only exclusive with HBO for a certain period of time, and most (not all) of the Target exclusive Game of Thrones bonus content was ported over on the bonus discs included with the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition of Game of Thrones boxset. ![]() Game of Thrones spoilers and ideas The Game of Thrones HBO TV series is a fictional TV series that takes place on a planet somewhere in the Universe during a period of time that is similar to earth’s middle ages. The series contains several different religions and gods that are different when compared to the religions of the earth. In the series there exists a total of 3 fire breathing Dragons that are super intelligent like dolphins. Some Dragons might be even more intelligent when compared to some human beings. The 3 Dragons in the series are so cute when born at the end of season one, and then during the 8 seasons are raised by the Mother of Dragons until in the 7th and 8th year they become mature full size adults. People can even ride the fun friendly fire breathing dragons like the Mother of Dragons and Jon Snow. Perhaps Dragons never stop growing and if they live long enough might grow larger every year (but that would need to be verified by the Game of Thrones writers since Dragons might stop growing at a certain age). A 100 year old Dragon would be much larger then a 10 year old dragon if they continued to grow every year. Peter Dinklage is one of my favorite actors that does an excellent job playing the fictional character called Tyrion Lannister. A Lannister always pays his debts and there are other unique moral teachings to learn from the Tyrion character. Even though the character Tyrion drinks more then he should, Tyrion is very knowledgeable and becomes an advisor because of his expertise in many areas. Tyrion is the hand of the Queen and the Hand of the King at times during this long TV series. Peter Dinklage is one of those actors that made Game of Thrones become very successful. *** Major spoiler alert *** There are over a dozen actors that I like in the Game of Thrones series, however my most favorite is Emile Clarke who plays the fictional character called Daenerys Targaryen (also know as the Mother of Dragons or the Dragon Queen). Game of Thrones is so popular because of Emile Clarke and her very skillful acting ability. The Mother of Dragons was freeing people from slavery, and during her last battle some people started questioning her humanity. The Mother of Dragons also wanted to conquer the entire world and free the entire world from slavery. When the Mother of Dragons was about to become the Queen of the seven kingdoms, the fictional character Jon Snow ended her life since he was afraid that he would lose his sister, since Jon Snows sister most likely would not bend the knee to the Dragon Queen. Also Jon Snow was worried that the Dragon Queen was becoming too power hungry with the desire to rule the world with future battles to come. In addition, Jon Snow did not like the way the Mother of Dragons fought the last battle that ended up ending innocent life in the city. Just like real life there sometimes is not happy endings, the same is true with the Game of Thrones TV series, since some people did not like the ending. Most likely there will never be another Game of Thrones TV series, however if there every was another series here is some brief ideas that HBO could do ** Major spoiler alert *** (A) There could be a pre-sequel made to the Game of Thrones series. Many centuries ago there were several hundreds of dragons that roamed the skies. People riding dragons battling each other to become the ruler of the seven kingdoms according to my understanding of the Game of Thrones historical records (this of course is a fantasy world and that history is not valid in real life). (B) Better yet instead of a pre-sequel, Emile Clark and many of the original actors could return to make another 8 seasons of Game of Thrones. For example, the fictional Game of Throne series has had a few people rise from the dead. At the end of season 8 the Dragon Queen is murdered by Jon Snow, and her dragon is so upset that the dragon takes the Mother of Dragons body and flies away. The writers could write a story where the dragon flies to a person and area of the world where the Dragon Queen rises from the dead. Jon Snow and others have experienced a bodily resurrection in the original series, why not the Dragon Queen also. Then once the Dragon Queen is risen from the dead, someone gives her a total of 12 dragon eggs as a gift or she locates the 12 dragon eggs in a secret hidden cave. The Mother of Dragons ends up having a total of 13 dragons. One adult dragon and 12 baby dragons that she needs to raise for the next 8 seasons. The Mother of Dragons will use the 13 Dragons to not only take back the seven kingdoms but to free the entire world from the evils of slavery. West of the known world (map) there are most likely other kingdoms on the Game of Thrones planet, and perhaps for the next 8 seasons the Dragon Queen needs to conquer around 20+ kingdoms before she can rule the entire world and end the evils of slavery worldwide. Also if Daenerys Targaryen the Dragon Queen is going to rise from the dead in a resurrection like Jon Snow did, then the writers should consider bringing back the character called Jorah Mormont. Jorah Mormont loved the Dragon Queen so much that he gave his life fighting to keep her alive when the battle of the white walkers occurred. The Dragon Queen and Jorah Mormont could rule and reign over the entire world and the 20+ kingdoms that were freed from slavery. The only problem is that Jorah Mormont character’s body was burned at the funeral and maybe the Game of Thrones series rules will not allow for a resurrection once a body is burned. But it would be interesting to see the Dragon Queen and Jorah Mormont ruling together since both fictional characters carried for each other in the original series. Maybe during the resurrection of Jorah Mormont he ends up with a body of a 20 year old man if the original actor Iain Glen decides not to return for another 8 seasons. Also maybe if there is going to be another 8 seasons, the Dragon Queen might end up running into a Dragon King with the same abilities as her. Also it would be interesting to see what the Dragon Queen ends up doing to Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister once she rises from the dead. There is a possibility that there might never be another Game of Thrones series, it’s a lot of work to create a TV series as successful as the original series. ![]() I had to exchange my Game of Thrones boxset since there was a total of 2 defective Blu-ray discs out of the 33 Blu-ray discs Before playing any optical disc including audio CD’s, DVD’s, and Blu-ray discs, I always place those discs in my Pioneer 4K BD-ROM computer drive to make sure Windows 10 and the Pioneer 4K BD-ROM drive can read the disc. Doing this will detect a completely defective optical disc, but one needs to watch or listen to the optical disc to make sure it is not partially defective. What is surprising is that Disc 1 for season 4 would load on my Pioneer BD-ROM drive but would not load at all on my year 2016 OPPO UDP-203. The surface of the optical disc looked perfectly clean, but then I noticed that there was one or two super small dust particles on the 100GB disc, so I cleaned the disc and then it would load fine in the OPPO UDP-203 once the dust was cleaned off the disc (Perhaps 100GB discs are not ideal as rental discs yet since a small amount of dust or fingerprint on the surface will cause the disc not to load). I heard that some RED BOX locations rent 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, but any scratches, fingerprints on the disc, or minor dust particles will cause customers to complain due to playback problems. In the future there needs to be improvements in the optical disc manufacturing process for 100GB discs and also there needs to be second and third generation 4K BD-ROM drives that read 100GB discs better. If the optical disc surface is not perfect then customers will run into problems. Once and awhile one can have a brief glitch that lasts a half a second while playing a 100GB disc, but that problem 99% of the time is not repeatable when doing a reverse scan over the same spot several times, and was just a player glitch or a dust particle on the disc. I hope that one day 100GB discs become as reliable as 50GB discs. With a 50GB disc many times dust, scratches, and fingerprints on the discs surface will not effect playback at all. The disc surface has to be really dirty or with a lot of scratches to make 50GB discs hard to play. The two defective 100GB Blu-ray discs in my Game of Thrones boxset that was verified on 3 different 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players even after the disc was cleaned several times Disc 1 92GB: Episode 1 Lockup pause at around 56 minutes and 3 seconds and player has to automatically jump ahead at least 40 seconds before disc can be played. Lockup pause is repeatable when reverse scanning and playing again at the exact same spot for episode 1 on two different OPPO players and one Sony 4K player. Episode 2 has a pause at around 18 seconds and player has to skip ahead 10 seconds to around 28 seconds for playback to be normal. (Both problems duplicated on Sony 4K Blu-ray player along with two OPPO UDP-203 players). Problem fixed when defective 100GB disc exchanged. Disc 2 90.2GB: Episode 4: Lock up pause at around 50 seconds and player has to automatically jump ahead 12 seconds before disc can be played. Also second lock up pause at around 1 minute and 38 seconds for episode 4 and player has to automatically jump ahead around 30 seconds before disc can be played. Problem fixed when defective 100GB disc exchanged. ***These two problems were solved as soon as I exchanged the two defective 100GB discs with Best Buy. *** It costs more to manufacture a triple layer 100GB discs. Its harder to stamp and manufacture a 100GB disc, and the failure rate for 100GB discs is still a lot higher when compared to 66GB, 50GB, and 25GB Blu-ray disc. So the studios need to work to improve the manufacturing process of 100GB discs. Some studios have better quality control when manufacturing 100GB discs. If one does not have time to watch their Game of Thrones 4K Blu-ray series, they can spot check each 100GB disc to see if there is a problem. So far when there has been a problem with the 100GB discs the playback problem is usually 2 minutes at the beginning or the end of the episode. Therefore, if one goes through all their Game of Thrones 4K Blu-ray discs and plays 2 minutes at the beginning and 2 minutes at the end of each episode they should be able to find out if they have any defective discs in the series. If one runs into a defective 100GB disc they can exchange the discs at the retailer that they purchased the discs from. Hopefully this problem I have with this Game of Thrones series is rare, and no one else is experiencing this problem with defective 100GB discs. Last edited by HDTV1080P; 02-10-2021 at 07:08 PM. |

I did comment on the steelbook in a prior post, totally excellent for seasons 1-7, I did not like season 8 with 6 discs stacked on top of each other(3 on the left and 3 on the right). Really excellent storage case style Best Buy came up with.

One also learns from one of the audio commentary tracks that they could not get any real dragons for the series, its not like one can go to the local zoo to rent a dragon. The friendly fire breathing dragons were computer generated imagery for this fictional TV series. They did a super excellent job making the 3 dragons look real for this series.

I returned my steelbook set on the final day of returns available to me. The store put it on the shelf for sale and it was still there 3 weeks later. Same sticker #. I am banking on the idea that there would be a significant price drop (30%-40%) by mid April if there is any stock remaining. If I am wrong, I will just have to settle for the standard complete 4K set for $100 on Black Friday 2021.
