this is why i don't usually make short and sweet posts.

my point was that, like betamax, blu-ray does appear to be the far superior of two high definition disc formats. however, that doesn't guarantee it victory.

of course sony, and the rest of the blu-ray disc association, aren't going to make the exact same mistakes that were made with beta. and this kind of thinking prompts statements like:

"...looking at their player, I don't see how it can't do well. Sony makes good products."

but it isn't always that simple. sony made a great product with beta, but look what happened. and, of course, all of us are sitting comfortably here in 2006 and it's easy for us to say, "oh yeah, beta was technically superior, but look at all the other mistakes that were made."

so, despite the fact that i think blu-ray looks like obvious format of choice right now, i'm still willing to entertain the possibility that 20 or 30 years from now, for whatever reason, i'll be making a short and sweet post on some holocube (or god only knows what) forum that reads something like:

one word: blu-ray

/no

VHS was actually JVC's format, not Panasonic's. (And a little known fact is that JVC actually licensed some of the technology used in their players from Sony!) In fact my first VHS player was a JVC machine, way back when 25+ years ago.
