Wasn't going to get the Gatchaman blu, but after watching the trailer reanimator linked to, I've added it to my "to get" list. The PQ looks amazing!

Original Video Animation. (Also known as OAV). Engrish for "direct to video", from days when such a distinction was more necessary.

The Gatchaman OAV was a reboot, and a one-off....but well received.

Question for those with the DVDs: which disk has Alien Bigfoot on it?

I'd be happy to own just the DVD release, especially if it has all the extras from ADV's previous sets, but if the blu-ray version really is based on the remastered video, that might add incentive of me to get the hi-def set. Maybe. Old school anime usually doesn't benefit HD the same way the latest Studio Ghibli movie does.

So disk 13 then contains episodes I have never seen before?

Actually, they're on disc 14 but, if you haven't seen the OVA's, then yes.

This release will benefit a lot because it's cell animated. Look at any of the Disney releases, they look incredible in motion and guess what, most of their animated stuff is from cell animation; since they're rescanning the film elements in HD, it would benefit a lot compared to downsizing to 480p, that's the same case for this release. As for Studio Ghibi, their films are made on much bigger budget compared to a much older lower budget TV show like Gatchaman and have tons of resources, it's shouldn't be compared together since animated shows in Japan have a much lower budget than the latest Ghibi film.

That's the thing. If the actual quality of the 70s anime isn't that strong, is the fact that it's cell-animated and based on film elements be enough to jump into the HD bandwagon? I'm glad it's not upconverted, but still.

If I were to guess, probably no to most causal buyers and I guess the positive of down-scaling the transfer is that it'll probably be the best looking DVD version of the show out there and it's much cheaper. Personally, I want to purchase the show in the highest quality possible, so I want the Blu-ray edition, though if it was DVD only, I wouldn't hesitate getting that either.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I have only seen Gatchaman as Battle of the Planets, so the OVA's will be a cool new part of the show for me.

I was pretty impressed with the comparison video posted a little above us when it came to the tone of the two different cultural takes on this show. The Japanese version seems more mature and serious, the American version more drama-lite with a bigger flair for action.

I have a feeling they will look good. Not Disney good, because the show always had a sort of gritty dirty aesthetic to the animation, but satisfying for us fans that have always seen them as muddy television transmissions.

+1. In some ways, these older shows benefit the most from HD remastering.

You're in for a real treat. The Japanese version doesn't really take place in outer space at all -- most of those scenes were new animation created for the U.S. version.

Thumbs up

This will be the perfect birthday present to myself come October. The side-by-side remaster comparison in the Tatsunoko teaser just blows my mind. Long live cel animation!
While I also grew up with Battle of the Planets, it's amazing how much fluff had to be created to neuter the mature material in the original Gatchaman. What is it about the Japanese that lets them have thoughtful storytelling while we get 7-Zark-7?

As for the live-action film, unless someone directly tells me it's Gatchaman, I would never have known it. Just not feeling it. The only recognizable images in the trailer to me are of Dr. Nanbu and the team flying downward in a circle.

But I can't wait for October!

In a way that's kind of a shame if true. I haven't seen Gatchaman outside of a couple episodes - I have some of the DVDs but never got around to watching them really - but since I grew up with Battle of the Planets I always like the outer-space stuff. I know 7-Zark-7/Neptune control/1-Rover-1 and Susan were all made specifically for Battle of the Planets but I always thought the rest of it like the outer space stuff was all from the original Gatchaman. The show always seemed to involve crazy space-ship type mechanical monsters and stuff - those were all just for Battle of the Planets? That can't be right can it?

For what it's worth, the "before" comparisons in that Japanese trailer are from some older VHS-quality source...the 2006 ADV DVDs look MUCH better than that. So this won't be quite as much of an upgrade as the trailer suggests, if you have the ADV DVDs.

Serious? I'm not sure if I'd call that a treat just yet. That sounds like a pretty big difference.

How do they explain all the giant robots then? Why would the Earth depend on a team of teenagers for something that is akin to all-out war on the human race, and thus requires a bigger military responce?

Not sure how I feel about this. Is there anyplace I can go to stream Gatchaman episodes?

Miscast, MISCAST!!! Joe (George, Jason, Dirk) was Sicilian, NOT Japanese :P

Seriously though, I can't wait for that movie to come out, I'm going to buy it regardless how it turns out.

And it seems better than Gatchaman Crowds :/

This is the one thing that I'm a bit worried about. I know these are uncut and contain far more violence, but I'm concerned if all the space stuff was all from Battle of the Planets, because I grew up with that stuff. I knew about 7-Zark-7 being added but I wasn't aware all the space stuff was newly animated for the US.
