It's just the nature of the storage medium. Hotter they get with sustained use the slower they run. The more data that's stored on them the slower they run.
This is part of the reason I feel that both MS and Sony have withheld over 100gb of usable storage. Most people would fill it to the brim but that introduces performance issues so they forced a 100gb buffer so performance will remain solid. |

Sony confirms the PS5 won’t support SSD storage expansion at launch

![]() I think the fact they couldn't eve detail it for launch is embarrassing given MS already has a fully functioning solution AND then Sony potentially had a win thanks to Western Digital proclaiming their model PS5 Ready more or less. It's this sort of crap that's got me not rooting for them this gen at launch. |

"Two suggested that Sony’s compatibility testing program hasn’t actually kicked off yet."
Did I read differently? Not hard edge fact that Sony hasn't kicked off *anything* yet is it? Also in the article, "It’d be great if that happened by launch, but it’s likely to be a bit past it, so please hold off on getting that M.2 drive until you hear from us," Cerny said in his tech lecture. I haven't read anything about the storage that surprises me. Have to wait, future update to come, stay tuned, etc. |

Am I the only one that listened to the Road to PS5 showcase in March?

We felt it wouldn't be possible to get internal upgrades quick enough at launch but Sony won't even tell us what potentially is needed to ensure compatibility at this point. That shouldn't require an update though. |

How can they start testing a product that doesn’t exist? The latest drives are presumably not fast enough. Sony can’t test until compatible drives become available.

I may have slightly blown it out of proportion myself but it is a little silly that Sony need to update the FW to enable compatibility rather than being baked in at the OS level. Especially when it wither works or it wouldn't really.

Kinda straightforward.
PS5 uses 12-channel. M.2 PcIE 4.0 uses 8-channel. So I wouldn’t rush out & buy any Internal even if it meets the bare minimum requirements of 7GB/s. It has to be able to pass through Sony’s “Custom” Controller. |
