Let's not get too excited here people. It's great we're getting this wave of 4k announcements from Kino but let's not forget... they're coming from Kino. While the announcements are exicting we gotta worry what issues these releases will have. They lucked out with TGTBATU only because they wisely sought the consultation of people who were extremely knowledgable and dedicated to the film for decades. They did the absolute best with the materials at hand.

Regarding the other two Dollars films coming who knows how they'll handle them because I personally don't think they'll take as much care with those as they did the aformentioned big mamu.

We're working with the same individuals.

I paid $40 for a Shout Factory copy last year...

I think I'm just going to stop buying Blu-ray at this point. Unless there's a title that is almost certain to never come out on UHD.

Oh sorry, wrong thread.
In this case, I’d be much more likely to upgrade if it’s a 4K scan of the OCN. If it’s an upscale of the existing masters, then probably not.

Actually I'd say there's very good reason to get excited. Kino has knocked it out of the park with their UHD releases, and they've already confirmed they're working with the same people they worked with on the UHD of TGTBATU for the remainder of the dollars trilogy.

Very very happy this is coming out from them. I've had the SF edition since day one and will also be picking up the UHD day one. One of the best sci-fi horror films ever made and one of the best films to come out of the 1970s.

Looks like I can expect to make a combo pack with this and the Scream Factory Blu (assuming it doesn't carry over the SF extras).

Pretty sure Kino will make the 4k a combo pack with a remastered BD like their other UHD offerings have been.

Maybe they'll do Poltergeist II and III in 4k given KL has been on the roll with reissuing former Scream Factory titles with 4k upgrades.

About time! i really enjoyed this since i saw it in the late 80s as a kid on TV and been one of my fave Sci-fi horror movies.

I have the Shout blu and this should look great in UltraHD 4K.

I was really excited until I saw it's the remake of the 1956 version, but I guess they only had license for that version. I wonder if Paramount will release the superior 1956 version since they are restoring a lot of their classics in 4K?

Extremely doubtful Paramount would release the 1956 version as the negatives are long gone, as is the fine grain master positive. The prints that do exist (which are cropped for "Superscope") are too far removed from the OCN for it to be worth scanning in 4K. It's unfortunate. The information just isn't there.

And as much as I love the 1956 version and think it's one of the best 1950s sci-fi/horror films (certainly better than The Blob), I think the 1978 version is probably one of the greatest remakes ever, and would even go as far as to say that it surpasses the original in a lot of ways. There are ideas that the original only hinted at that are much more developed in the remake. Taking the story out of a small town and transplanting it into a major city really ups the tension I think.

Honestly though, I’d love it if someone somewhere did a new transfer of Body Snatchers ‘56, the current one needs to be retired as it’s dogshit. Doesn’t have to be 4K. Yesh, I understand that the OG elements are long gone but the Blus don’t look duff *just* because of that, it’s because they’re all from an old-ass transfer that’s been nibbled at with various forms of noise reduction, sharpening etc and that “remastered” Olive disc was just atrocious. Frozen grain all over the place and they crushed the blacks for good measure.

Oh yeah I don't disagree, it definitely needs a new scan. I have that remastered Olive disc and it's....pretty bad (like most Olive discs tbh). I just don't want people to get their hopes up for a full-blown 4K restoration given the elements available.
