Cool

Think I've got sale list finalized. Going to go to store in one fell swoop in order to make sure Digis look good once Demy is released. Any comments are welcome.

All that Heaven Allows
Life Aquatic
Ace in the Hole
Smiles of a Summer Night
Judex
Hard Days Night
Red River
Scanners
Pickpocket
Demy
*Big Chill
(if sale extends or is included)

Still toying with L'Eclisse, La Notte, Il Sorpasso and M. Verdoux

Wow, you are a brave soul. Those films are definitely not the ones I would recommend as blind buys, except if you have many Antonioni or Godard films already.

I hope those films you listed will not put you off from these great directors.

I would recommend Band of Outsiders or Vivre Sa Vie as the first films to watch Godard. His later films are a bit whimsical.

I found Antonioni's L'Avventura or Blow-up to be great introductory films to his style.

Billy Wilder, Robert Bresson and Ingmar Bergman. Excellent renowned directors make an excellent shopping list.

was also going to say - hope you know what you're in for.. I wouldn't call Weekend "whimsical". To me, Wes Anderson is whimsical. Le Havre is whimsical. Weekend is challenging, difficult, colorful, political, disturbing (perhaps in a good way,) occasionally very funny and intermittently brilliant. That's how I would describe it.

Antonioni is/was the poster boy for the "art film." many love it. I am lukewarm on him.

I stand corrected. I agree with your above assessment of Weekend.

Have you seen L'Avventura or Blow-up. I cannot say I am big fan of Antonioni (I prefer Godard, now that we are talking about these two directors), but these films are his most rewarding or possibly his most accessible.

Also Blow-up has Herbie Hancock's best film score theme. I am almost certain Mike Myers was inspired by this film to make the Austin Powers character. It is Antonioni's take on swinging London.

Well, I watched La notte on Hulu just earlier today, after having enjoyed Blow-up a few months ago. It mostly went over my head, aside from the gorgeous photography. Not keen to revisit but given some of the comments regarding L'avventura here today leads me to believe it may be more up my alley.

I haven't watched those movies but I blind bought L'Eclisse and thought it was really good.

Well, Band of Outsiders, Contempt, and Breathless are some of my all-time favorites, so I think I'll be alright.

Both films have similarities. In my opinion, L'Avventura is the best film from his Monica Vitti Tetralogy (or some consider it more of a trilogy). Blow-up is just a fun film with Antonioni aesthetics. It must be the swinging London atmosphere that makes it so entertaining, at times it does not seem like an Antonioni film.

How is it so brave of someone to blind buy a movie? the worst that could happen is that you hate the movie, nothing that serious.

Default My Barnes and Noble Haul (on reserve for tomorrow)

I have reserved copies of the following Criterion Blu-rays:

Throne of Blood
Rififi
Picnic at Hanging Rock
A Hard Day's Night
Breaking the Waves
All That Heaven Allows
L’eclisse
Judex
The Hidden Fortress
Il sorpasso
Ace in the Hole
Seconds
Persona
Jules and Jim
The Long Day Closes
Red River

Total standard retail price on all of these items is $649.84.
B&N's 50% off sale changes that total to: $324.92.
My B&N membership (10% off) changes that total to $292.43.
$50 in B&N gift cards that I saved since December ($75 in gift cards gets you a $10 gift card) changes that total to $242.43.
And I will be making this purchase with my new B&N Master Card which takes off another 5% making the final total:

$230.31

That's an average of $14.39 per title. In addition, I will be making my purchase in the state of Delaware (no sales tax) and since I will be using my B&N Master Card for the first time, I will be receiving a $25 gift card that I will save for the November sale.

I am a happy man!

My main reason for watching La notte was to determine whether or not to get L'eclisse in the sale - and it left me completely undecided! I think this'll be a trilogy I'll need to see all the individual parts of and judge on their own merits instead of using one piece to merit some blind buys.

Alain Delon is in L'Eclisse, that's what actually got me on board to blind buy it. He's a boss.

That's a great list but I don't know the need to post all the prices and what you did to get those deals. Good for you though.

Are some of the items not getting marked down?

For example, Vengeance Is Mine is a $39.99 MSRP title, but right now instead of being $19.99, it's $29.01.

It comes out at the end of August when the sale is long over.
