I kept thinking I want to see this in HFR for the new and different experience, but the movie just looks too mediocre and I'm still afraid I'll become intolerant of the frame rate after the first ten minutes. That's what happened with me and the first Hobbit movie. The movie just wasn't clicking by itself and I couldn't stick with it to adjust.

I still have some trust the Avatar sequel will showcase it better, and it will likely have a much more up-to-standards release. It's not like this is a format that I'm super excited for and want to catch on, but I'm still really into giving it a chance in an entertaining movie.

Anyone scared of HFR because of the first Hobbit should give it another chance. The tech came a long way by Hobbit 3 and especially Billy Lynn.

that's good to hear...I saw the first Hobbit in HFR 3D in a theater here in NYC and was not impressed at all...had that ultra real soap opera look to it...didn't look filmic at all...

In the screendaily article posted upthread they mentioned that Lee has made use of variable frame rates for GM, what this means is that it's not going to be ultra-smooth HFR from first frame to last. Still not all the way "filmic" but enough so that it's not so immediately off-putting, not until the director really feels that the extra temporal resolution is needed e.g. action scenes. James Cameron is another who wants HFR (mainly for how it helps with strobing in 3D) but who isn't a fan of the soap opera look, so he'll be using a variable frame rate approach on the Avatar sequels as well.

If you're lucky you'll be able to get a 2D 120fps showing of Gemini Man but 3D in 120fps needs a hefty bespoke dual projector setup and so those kinds of presentations will still be very, very limited in the western world for GM just as they were for Billy Lynn's. That said, I think New York had one of the handful of 3D 4K 120fps venues for BL so you might get the full enchilada after all.

Me, I loved how Billy Lynn's looked in 4K60 on the UHD but I appreciate that it's not to everyone's taste.

I like HFR, but a good content is the most important.

I've been wanting to see Billy Lynn at 60FPS (and for the first time in general), but I don't have a UHD player yet. But yesterday I had the bright idea of looking up "billy lynn 60fps" on youtube and saw a couple of clips. It really doesn't look all that off putting and I still want to see the whole movie that way.

They should have gone with Mickey Rourke instead - now there's a movie!

[Show spoiler]

or how about Mel Gibson??

[Show spoiler]

I get that the studio wants a current superstar whose movies still make big money, but did they have to pick someone who still looks 33? It defeats the fun of the concept they are selling. I mean, all the studio had to do is NOT pick Will Smith or Tom Cruise. That's it.

Even RDJ would have been a better choice if they must go for box office clout.

[Show spoiler]

All this to say, I am a Will Smith fan, and I still want to see this movie. It just feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity.

Most people won't notice a difference between 24fps and 60fps.

But 120fps just looks flat out fake and stupid.

The action in the gemini man trailer looks beyond awful.

Though I try to not be surprised anymore by what "most people" will notice with picture quality or difference, I absolutely think most would see something's different if a natively HFR shot movie is playing at 60 on their television -- unless their TV has been stuck on motion smoothing all the time. The HFR on 4K discs seems to be limited to 60 though, so that's probably currently the best we can get at home.

The fact that Gemini Man is variable throughout the film has me more curious again. So… I might be sold back on it.

Oh, I agree that people would notice a HFR playing in 60. But they won't notice something like 24 being output at 60.

Something I'd be really curious to see and experiment with -- just to see how it registers on screen and if it could be useful in a film -- is to have a scene appear to be playing at 24fps and then have some elements in the scene, like an alien creature or some spooky thing, moving at the actual higher smooth frame rate. The scene looks like what we're used to registering when watching a movie, and then something otherworldly is smoothly moving around and flowing in that scene's environment.

I started thinking about that when I was bored watching the recent Ghost in the Shell movie, when robot things were kind of moving around like liquid. Maybe it could work with hallucination trippy type sequences?

Maybe it would end up looking like a complete disaster, but it could be really interesting to test it out.

I guess I'm having some trouble following and maybe I wouldn't notice it either.
My hypothetical idea that I just posted above would require 24 being output at 60 or higher, and maybe that artificial 24 would be more difficult to have looking natural than I imagine. I don't know for sure if this is the same as what you're saying.

Still getting John Woo "Paycheck" vibes from the trailers, but I did like that one.

I'm seeing it in theatres. I was so pleasantly surprised by Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk and so disappointed that I missed it when it came out, I'm taking my chances. I looks like Ang Lee making a John Woo movie, which I'm all for, and his work in the digital age has been fascinating.

The thing is, Will Smith is more bankable than those actors. RDJ has only really been really successful in the MCU and Sherlock.

UHD disc's highest frame rate is 60p, yes.

If it follows the same or similar post-production pipeline as Billy Lynn's then the 60p and 24p versions of Gemini Man won't be simple 'cut outs' of the 120p version, they'll be specially frame blended to provide the appropriate motion cadence for those respective versions. My TV has a 120Hz panel so I like to use the Motionflow with Billy Lynn's 4K60 version to make it as smooth as possible. It's not 'rebuilding' the 120p version as such, but as the processing is only having to guess every other frame - unlike having to fill in four out of five frames when playing back 24p with Motionflow set to maximum - then there's a minimum of motion artefacts.
