Unhappy Need a new Reciever on a small budget.

So here is the story...I bought a Marantz SR5002 in January and I did like it...it wasn't the best looking thing in the world, and I wish it had hdmi upscaling but whatever. Can't always get what you want when you have a $300 budget.

Well about a month weeks ago my roommate tripped and fell into the back of my setup, breaking 2 HDMI cables (which were plugged into the receiver). At the time I thought it was no big deal...just some broken $3 HDMI cables. So I bought new ones, went to use them...but got no video pass through.

Upon closer inspection I noticed that inside the HDMI out there was a metal prong sticking up that wasn't there before. I knew that was the problem.

I send my system in to get repaired...I figure I will have to pay something but whatever, it can't be that bad...well I get the call today and the mechanic tells me that a board needs to be replaced in order to replace the HDMI out and that costs anywhere between $250-$300...

At this point should I just buy another Marantz SR5002 from Accessories for Less (the cost right now went up to $350) or just shop for something else...something better that is in the $300-400 range?

I mean I would get my SR5002 back from the shop...everything works on that beside the HDMI out...meaning I just don't get video pass through from my PS3 -- so I have to use an optical cable for audio and miss out on HD audio.

So here is the basic idea...

I need a new receiver. Do I:

1) Pay the $300 to fix my current Marantz SR5002
2) Buy a new SR5002 for $350
3) Look for a better receiver in the $300-400 price range

**If you choose number 3 -- Any suggestions?

Thanks

Does your budget include money coming from your roommate who dove in?

I agree with above post, make your clutz of a roommate pay to get it fixed, that is unless you pushed him or whatnot

He said he would pay the $300 to get it fixed. But at this point I payed $300 for the receiver anyway. I'm not sure if I should just get it fixed, or buy something new and have one receiver that does everything but video passthrough via HDMI (could be usefull in a bedroom/school) and another receiver that does everything for a living room.

I was thinking about not fixing the SR5002 and just using the $300 he gives me to buy something else/better/a new SR5002

I would take the three hundred, buy a second reciever (pay the 50 dollar difference).

dont get the broke one fixed and you can always use for another setup. I just dont see the point in paying the same amount you bought it for to get it fixed.

Have one for your living room and one for the bedroom or gameroom or whatever.

He would use it as a brick. If he had the speakers and everything and would use it, I just might think about doing this. But I'm not going to give a receiver to a guy who has no use for it :P

Well I'm looking at the Onkyo 606 right now. Is there anything else out there comparable in the $300-$400 range? I just want to have some options other than the Onkyo.

Do you have a few hundred you can spend? Add $200 onto the $300 he is giving you and upgrade to a $500 receiver. That's what I would be trying to do. Use this tragedy to your advantage.

Just a thought.

Edit: 606 is great - I'm very happy with mine, got it about 2 1/2 months ago.
Edit: Ah, then keep the broken one and use it for audio only, maybe a nice 2 channel system

I would take the $300 and then add more money to it and then upgrade to like the 5003 or something similar...

JR has the Sony STR-DG920 for $399. Get the $300 from your roommate, give him the receiver and jump all over this deal.

Sounds like your roommate is a good dude- I wouldn't hold him over the coals for the whole thing unless you're really strapped for cash. Maybe get an Onkyo 606/607 or Yamaha 663/664 and have him pay 50% up to $300- that way he's not in for the whole cost. I dunno, just seems like if you live with the guy maybe don't dick him over.

I would look into refurbs at Accessories4less.com or 6ave.com or eCost. Sell your broken one on eBay as an "as-is" item- someone might give you a decent amount for it.

True. I will talk it over with him, see if he wants it. I didn't think about it that way until you mentioned it. Also on a side note, I don't live with him anymore. He was my roommate this past year of college, I'm living with different people my sophomore year.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I will check everything out and let you know what I end up doing. If anyone has any more ideas though, I'm all ears.

So here are the receivers I'm looking at getting right now.

Pioneer VSX919AHK 120 Watt 7 Channel A/V Receiver -- $400

Onkyo TX-SR606 90w x 7ch HDMI Theater Receiver BLACK -- $350

Sony STR-DG920 7.1-Channel Home Theater A/V Receiver -- $400

Out of those 3, what would be my best choice or would they all be about the same in terms of features and audio/video quality?

Jeter, I think if it was down to those 3 I would go with the Sony, it has the leg up in video processing and it a fantastic receiver, you can ask Brettalica, JasonR, Mr Roy and myself. There are others with it but I can't think of them off the top of my head. Mr Roy used to have an Onkyo 605 and says the Sony is much better.... the 920 is essentially the same as the 2400 ES from sony minus pre-outs and RS232 control.

Good luck.

good to see that todays youth STILL have morals. good job man.
the only thing you have to do is OFFER him the receiver....
if he declines then sell it on ebay 'as-is'
