I will probably move in my house in 2 months, right now my TV is on a TV stand about 2 feet high, but in my house I want my TV to be wall mounted.
So I was wondering, at which height should my TV be? I have a Sony Bravia 32'' (in 2 years I will probably upgrade it for something better), and I will probably be seat at 12 feet maximum from the TV. I was thinking of putting the top of the TV at 6 feet from the floor, is that too high? |

generally speaking, the middle of the screen should be at eye level from your seated position.
If that isn't possible, then I would suggest as low as you can get it. 12 feet is a bit far for a screen of that size, recommended distance would be a maximum of about 5'4". |

Sounds like a plan. You don't want to be looking up at the screen everytime you sit to watch a movie or television, unless of course you have a chiropractor and masseuse on retainer.

Yes, eye level, or somewhere thereabout, is best for wall-mounted TVs -- or any TV really. I have my living room (my 'main HT') TV wall-mounted pretty dang high so that it's out of harm's way from flying balls and toys (I have two young boys), and I can't wait to bring it down a couple feet. It has to be high right now, though, as my boys are rowdy as all heck and I'd rather not have a ball flying through the plasma's glass or a toy scratching the bezel.
I do also have a wall-mounted set in my bedroom at a much lower height and it is more comfortable to watch, so I can tell you from experience between the two sets I have wall-mounted in my own home that lower is better. |

I like to watch my TV semi-reclined, prop my feet up and relax. Doing that makes me naturally look up slightly. I have mine set where the bottom of my TV is at eye level. That way if I'm sitting straight it's still good, but when I really settle in for a marathon viewing of Band Of Brothers, or Lord Of The Rings I'm still good. I have it at about 42" from the floor.

I have a 58" set mounted on the wall, 28 inches from the floor.
It was supposed to be 30 inches from the floor but I messed up the measurements. Anyways it is ideal. I had thought of putting it up over the fireplace but in retrospect that would have been too high. So "eye level" is a good guide. |

Rule of thumb for me is have your viewing position eye level 1/3rd of the way up the TV. This way while you are sitting its at a comfy level and if you recline or lay down the TV is still in the correct view position

I always was of the assumption that the premise was so that, when you are sitting, your eye level smacks right into the center of the television. Then again, I don't like my TV to be high anyway, don't wanna crane me neck. Mine is about 30" from the floor.

Will you have furniture or a center channel speaker under it? If so, this could dictate the height. Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with having it a little bit high. No one is going to get neck strain if you're looking slightly up at a TV from 12' away. It's not like you're in the front row at a movie theater. But, since LCDs look best when seen straight on, you don't want it too high.
You have to take into consideration the possibility that you may go with a larger TV some day. Last edited by repete66211; 05-22-2009 at 05:34 PM. |

Im about to move and by design of the living room, I will need to put my 37inch LCD tv on top of the fireplace enclosure. This will make the tv at it's low point maybe 5ft off the ground. I'll be sitting probably 10-12 feet away, does anyone see any major issues with this?
Thanks |

Oh and if you're going to mount it high, and you choose to post pics in your gallery, be sure to prepare yourself for "it's too high" comments. ![]() |

This wouldn't be going on the wall...but just in it's own stand, does that make a diff? |
