Default is there truly a Limited/Rare Blu-ray?

from my experience, i have only seen anime such as the first pressing of Akira (w/fancy slipcover and 32pg booklet) and Jin-Roh The Wolf Brigade (i actually have jin-roh, didn't realize how hard to find it was). i know that Blade Runner w/the suitecase was rare at one point, but now it is pretty easy to find. any others anyone can mention?

I think that with places like Amazon and Ebay you can find pretty much any movie you want. Although I have only see Akira twice, once at Borders the other day and once it came thru my office a few months back but we sold it.

Akira with slipcover and liner notes was only for the first pressings of the title. You'd have to dig around to find it now since new pressings omit these.

Blade Runner briefcase and Harry Potter suitcase are also pretty much exhausted. The HD DVD versions can be found in limited quantities at a few online stores.

Best Buy had exclusive promotional Blu-ray Discs for Spider-Man 3 and Hancock that had a featurette on the film and in the case of Hancock, a sampling of extras from Sony BDs.

There are also retailler exclusive BDs that included bonus discs, other goodies, or special packaging. Circuit City had exclusive BDs for Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer that had a bonus disc and Meet The Spartans that inclued a T-shirt. Best Buy has an exclusive bonus disc with Fast & Furious and limited Dr. Manhattan case for Watchmen. Target had two Paramount exclusive BDs: Iron Man in mask case & Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in book packaging with photos and stories from the film (unlike Digibook, this was DVD sized).

How about try Per Un Pugno Di Dollari (A Fistful of Dollars) on Blu-ray? It has been out in Italy over a year ago, but it is very hard to find now. It has an amazing transfer and English mono dub and is region free.

it's still early in the format's life.

The titles you, and others are mentioning are getting harder to find/more expensive, and that trend will continue with new titles etc. over time.

If you're talking about the movie itself, I'm no help. But there are some SteelBook releases that are difficult to find, and expensive to get. I can think of the Canadian "I Am Legend" steelbook, the German "John Rambo" Steelbook, just to name a couple.

I agree...for the right price, you can get anything that is no OOP. I've got the Blade Runner Briefcase. They made over 100k so it's not super rare. There's plenty floating around.

If you want to count special editions that came with bonus items or other tchotchke's, we could be here all day.

But if we're concerning ourselves with just films, regardless of how many variations in packaging or what-have-you may exist, then no, I don't think there's anything hard to find or rare.

Some of us Blu-ray "old timers" remember when Paramount briefly went HD DVD exclusive, and pulled all their Blu-ray titles off the shelves. Titles like Blades of Glory were going for $80+ on eBay--it was nuts. But that train has sailed.

I think Yukikaze from Bandai is probably one that is very difficult to find (also, it didn't help that retail was $149, it was not widescreen and it was an upconvert). Jin-Roh, you can find but you will have to pay a high price for it but you can find it from a third party around $80.

Some of those Bandai Visual/Honneamise Blu-ray releases before they merged with Bandai Entertainment are going to be difficult to find and they have no plans to re-release them.

When I saw this thread, the first thing that came to mind was the newness of the Blu-ray format and that in and of itself means there are little to none "rare" titles to be found. Beta hit the nail on the head with his comment.

There will come a time for us early adopters to find in 10 or so years from now, that several of our discs will be considered "rare". That is just a natural evolution of any format.

The original Led Zeppelin "The Song Remains The Same" Blu-ray from 2007 has a Cameron Crowe interwiew that went OOP very quickly due to copyright issues and is now replaced by one with out the interview.

Default Linkin Park

There are definitely some that are harder to get . I can't get a hold of the Linkin Park concert unless I pay 2-3x as much at an auction or reseller. I believe it was an exclusive at Best Buy, and by the time I went to go pick it up they were all out. They also don't sell it at their website last I checked.

I wish I knew if they were going to bring this one back.

What about the version of Superman that had the lossless audio that people were paying stupid amounts for a couple years ago.

That's the only one that came to mind for me. Luckily, I found a copy at a local retailer called Zia Records in Phoenix. They had a handful on the shelf before Warner recalled the title. I'm a big fan of Cameron Crowe's film "Almost Famous," so I was very eager to snag that disc since it featured his vintage interview. Funny, I also found the "Akira" disc with the limited edition packaging at the same shop. In fact, if there is anyone in the Phoenix area looking for it I believe a copy or two are still sitting on the shelf at a couple of Zia Records locations.

Yeah, I think "Green Day: Bullet in a Bible" was also a Best Buy exclusive. You can still snag a copy at a local Best Buy but it is gone from their website. They recently released an exclusive Rob Thomas Blu-ray disc as well.
