Red face Suggestions for a new receiver?

Hi guys,
We're looking to pick up a new receiver, and I honestly need some help. Our budget is $420, andwe need something that works well. If anyone has any suggestions, or knows of any Black Friday deals, it would be a huge help. Thanks!

howdy, my friend bought this receiver, we set it up, it works perfectly and he is very happy with it. you can get it for $380.00 it's brand new and free shipping right now. like anything else in this field/hobby, make sure you give it good ventilation. all receivers will get warm if you box them in. he is very happy with it and happy that he went with it too. it's an Onkyo 607 and it decodes all lossless formats, has 7.2 audio out, universal port for ipod/iphone/itouch (my friend picked up the adapter and it works great, give both audio and video from his touch to his tv) best of luck to you with whatever you end up getting.

i to have an onkyo and i am very happy with it. keep us posted.

Piggybacking on the Onkyo 607 mentioned in the above post...

Amazon currently has a deal on the Onkyo TX-SR607 for $349.99, plus you get a free Onkyo UP-A1 iPod dock. Free S&H of course! Lower than your budget but hey, who doesn't like to save as much as possible while getting the most bang for your buck?

+1 and worth every dollar over your budget... when you say bang for buck, there is none better. IMO

Jason, it was like you knew what I was going to recommend

Both are excellent suggestions so far, but of the two I think I would go with the Marantz.

if you own an ipod or an iphone/itouch, this deal which includes the dock and free shipping is going to be hard if not impossible to beat! my friend paid for the dock and it cost him $105.99 what a deal!!!

You may want to check these receivers in Canada.

I love Onkyo but if that Marantz has pre-outs... "game over, man! Game over!" It's a refurb, but I wouldn't let that scare you off. You can always get a squaretrade warranty if you're worried about that.

Double-piggybacking off the 607, there is also the Onkyo HT-RC160 that just released, which is essentially the same as the 607 minus the front HDMI port and I think 10w/ch. Should be a little cheaper, roughly about a $50 price diff in the US.

I also second the 1610 which I just picked up last week for my office. My choices were between the HT-RC160 and the AVR-1610, but I went the 1610 route only because the receiver sits 3 feet from me on my desk, and all the talk of the 607/160 running hot didn't appeal to me with my proxmity from the unit. The 1610 has actually surprised me performance-wise, and the Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume (which also comes with the RC160) is just awesome! I've been using the unit pretty much all day for music while I work, and it does not run hot after hours of use.

I wouldn't brush off Sony with such a wide stroke. They may not appeal to you for whatever reason, but there are many satisfied Sony AVR owners here.

While I personally wouldn't consider the lower-end equipment manufacturers either, it should be noted that not everyone can afford top-notch equipment.

Default What receiver to replace a Pioneer 56txi?

Hi: I'm thinking of replacing my pioneer elite 56Txi. I have a few questions to ask. I'm thinking of going with either 1910/2310 or a 2808/09or Marantz 5003/7001/2,my speakers are Axiom M-60's(mains) Vp150(Center) which one of the Denon/Marantz or any others you'd care to recommend? My main concern is the music side of the listening equation. My room is approx. 1,700 cubic feet. One final question what is the general opinion of the PS-3 as a blu-ray/DVD player? Thanks for all your help in advance it is very much appreciated!!!

Don't know what your thoughts are, but I have had 2 sonys, the 710, which wasn't that great, and my current 920, which is an ES2400 minus some pre-outs and other little additions. and it has been a great receiver.

I don't know what you think you are getting with Pioneer and Yamaha anymore these days because they both tend to bench test in the NOT so Good category too. Pio 1019 rated 28.7 wpc with 5 channels, not the 120 listed. The Yamaha 665 rated at 42 wpc with 5 channels. Fact of the matter is that companies are having to add so many features that entry-mid level receivers are losing power for features.

Personally I think you need to be in a Marantz, Denon or Pioneer Elite in order not to get into the above categories

i've owned onkyos and denons in the past. i currently have a 4308ci.

most AVRs mfr used to advertise true RMS 20hz-20kHz, but now all they advertise is 1kHz test signal and that's it. meaning when they say 100w into 7 ch. it's usually a lie. that is why i write off sony&sherwoods and no name brands, they tend to be the worst of the bunch. 100w is typically boils down to around 20w when load hits, i know not everyone plays it@0dB, blah blah blah, but those 2 are just not worth the $ because of features they don't have vs. any of the other brands.

sony doesn't even make their own crap anymore, it's all re-branded Sony and they charge arm&leg for it. they might 'partner' w/people but they dont do their own direct mfr of stuff they put Sony logos on anymore. they're a shell of their former selves, it's the 'bose' of our times for AVRs.

look, for amps it's all about dB/W, that makes it worthwhile. as long as any AVR doesn't give u less than 15dB/W you're fine. i think most avg. home cinema room sizes doesn't even need anymore than 5-10dB/W anyways... but i'm digressing. amps don't really matter as much anymore unless you have a 20FT x 60FT 'auditorium' for a HT room or u can build your own freakin' IMAX.

just pick the features you want.

I don't have any experience with the model you mentioned, but I have owned two Yamaha receivers and two Yamaha integrated amplifiers in the past. They were excellent. Many of the low priced Yamaha receivers have pre-outs.
