Angry Gaming trends that need to die

I was playing Tekken 6 for the last couple of weeks and it donned on me that I am seriously sick of fighting games that have you fight through all human opponents up until the final boss battle that turns out to be something unhuman. This is a trend that needs to die. I don't want to fight a giant Egyptian lizard or a Giant Machine with a girls name. If you want me to fight these you should put regular characters like this in earlier in the game or allow me to become a large animal beast as well. Do you have any other annoying gaming trends that need to die?

Ennemies that look like cr@p early on, mini bosses pretty much the same, then the design becomes more and more elaborate and better as you progress, and the ennemies more awesome.

Good design = -every- ennemy has a cool/ unique/ awesome design.
Weak/ early on should not mean rushed and looking terrible (imo).

Control schemes that are clunky I mean by now the norm should be fluent character control followed by fluent aiming or what have you, but too often do I play a game that has potential (Bionic Commando, Silent Hill, Shaun White Snowboarding, I'd even say Demon's Souls (though I love the game)) but suffers from control issues that don't seem like it takes rocket science to fix. Bionic Commando is def the worst out of all games listed btw the control made trying to monkey around near impossible at parts and frustrated me to the point where I had to let it go.

the idea that "linearity is bad". Yes, in theory it sounds limiting, but in practice, it gives the game direction.

I didn't have any issues with Bionic Commando's controls. You defintely have to take a little time to learn them but once I had them down, I had a blast in multiplayer.

Online only games or games with just a token mission. I like deathmatch or capture the flag as much as anyone, but nothing beats a good story driven game. No offense to online gamers.

Yes I would say stop putting online where it is not necessary. Both type is good, but stop always mixing them! RE5 is a good exemple and now Dead space will also have multiplayer...its ok if it is not compromising the single experience like Uncharted 2 did. Some people still love single player games.

What, Tekken doesn't have you fighting panda bears and wooden people anymore?

But seriously, the decreasing importance of single-player mode really annoys me. Don't get me wrong, I really love to play online multiplayer matches, but it really seams that single player is something that just gets tacked on, and isn't the real game. Take MW2 for instance, it almost feels like the single player mode is just there as a training exercise for multiplayer.

I can stand the wooden people and the panda because they are of relative size to my character, now NANCY on the other hand is not. You can't even use all your moves against it/her. If you can't use all the moves on all the characters then why bother making the moves at all.

Since they are regular characters the basic mechanics of Tekken are still there. When you fight the boss in Tekken 6..throw all of that out the window. Kind of annoying.

Trends in gaming that need to die...music based games, half-assed single player modes..and the one that will never go away FPS games set in WWII..we won, they lost.. there's not much more of a story to tell..

Online gaming is great, but since online console gaming has boomed developers don't seem to feel the need to include anything for people who like to play games with a friend sitting next to them. Co-Op campaign modes should be utilized more as well as more split screen options, I loved it when you use to to able to do deathmatchs split screen with AI or bots. I cant remember the last game that had that option.

Ya couldn't believe I seen a Need For Speed game come out on PS3 as single player, or online multiplayer only! Go figure! A racing game with NO 2 player option. WTF?

Mine, which is a wide open topic admittedly, is the endless Sequels.

And I'm going beyond Madden-like games.

Do we really need a Mortal Kombat 9? How is that going to revolutionize the system?

Modern Warfare 2 is what, the 8th Call of Duty game?

How many times do I need to track down the Master Sword, the Boomerang, and the Slingshot in Zelda games?

Why doesn't Mario just off Bowser and his kids already?

Ironically, one of the big series this doesn't apply to is Final Fantasy because the mechanics and story change every iteration, so while they are numbered they are unique.

I side with this. If I didn't like the first one, why would I like 3 more?

It really hurts my head because so much time is spent just updating old games that we don't get anything new and exciting in a new type of game. I don't like the Call Of Duty games, I just don't.

I blame Doom for all of this.

Yes, it would be nice if every game could be as revolutionary as Doom.

Link's a child, and children don't put away their toys. So he loses his shit once and awhile and you have to find it before proceeding... Why doesn't he learn responsibility after saving the world? Well that's a different story.

Poor Storytelling.

This is my number 1 complaint. With all this talk about games as art going on now its counterproductive to have poor stories. Granted this is something that has improved, but it has such a long way to go. Its rare to find a story in a game that has a coherent beginning, middle and end. It seems like story is tacked on as an after thought, or is made to fit gameplay, where to succeed in having a strong narrative it should be the other way around.

I also despise cliffhangers. You wait years for a game, play through it, only to have a cliffhanger shoved in your face, its beyond ridiculous. Granted, sometimes it works, just like sometimes in movies it works. But if I have to wait 2+ years for a new installment, its nothing but a bother.

My favorite is the developer explanation of the ending of Resistance 2 when they explain why Capelli shot Hale in the head was that it hadn't been done before and they were not sure how to end it in the firs place so they went with that option, like they have no clue what story they wanted to tel until they had to tell it.
