Component experts, I need some input. - Blu-ray Forum

I was reading one of the “Fun” threads on this site when I came across a post where the member stated that this amplifier was one of his “most prized possession”.

His comment got me thinking which generally comes out bad in regards to saving money.

To me my audio system sounds great. Loud when I want it, extremely loud when needed.

But his comment made me wonder. What (if anything) can an expensive amplifier like the Emotiva XPA-5 do for me????

An AVR serves a number of purposes - It's the brain (Preamp) having items such as Blu-Ray player, CD, Cable Box, etc. into...the brawn (AMP) providing power to the speakers, and often times a tuner, allowing you to listen to music with an antenna.

When you seperate, an external amp's ONLY job is to provide power to the speakers. It is the workhorse of the system. You can listen to music through a CD player and an AVR, but many (Myself included) get a better sound out of a seperate amp/preamp/CD/SACD player. This allows for each unit to do it's job and do it well, instead of having one unit that does it all. Think of an AVR as a Jack of All Trades, whereas seperates are each specialists.
