Default Anyone ever use a hdmi to component converter?

HI folks. I have 720p projector with component connections that i'd like to continue using instead of upgrading my project. I plan on getting a blu ray player and a new receiver and wanted to know how the hdmi to component converters worked. Can I come out of my blu ray player to my receiver (for DTS-MA & True HD) audio, then go out from my receiver HDMI out to the converter then to my projector? Is this an okay solution? I know it won't give me 1080 but I wanted to know if this would work to get high def video and still be able to get my HD audio? If yes, which converter would you recommend? Thanks.

Your new receiver when you get one will most likely have component outs built in so you should be able to connect to your receiver via HDMI and then from your receiver to your projector via component. Pretty simple actually. No need for an adapter It'll all just be a matter of going though and setting all the proper, uh, settings.

At least I think... I dunno...

And you can always just go direct from the blu ray player to your projector with component and then use the analog outs to your receiver for the lossless audio, or possibly even still use the HDMI for the audio along with the component straight to your projector. Hope that makes sense. It's late and I've had a few beers

If you get HDMI pass-through receiver you will be fine to connect it up. But if it's 720p, the HDMI won't make much of a difference and that's from my experience. Your components are only as good as their weakest link.

I think you probalby had a few too many. First I contacted Yamaha yesterday as well and they said they don't think that there is any receiver currentlyon the market that will take an HDMI signal and convert it down to component. This is something that I'm not totally positive about but that's what they said. I don't even know what you are saying in the last paragraph there. Out to the projecdt using component then use analog outs to your receiver for lossless audio???? I don't think so. Either pass out or have another. Thanks though...I think.

Well I think that 480i to 720p would probably be a pretty significant upgrade. You really don't think so? Can you recommend one of these converters? Thanks.

Yes........... if your receiver has the 5.1/7.1 multi-channel analog inputs, and you get a blu ray player with the same kind of outputs, you can get the HD audio that way! It is the only way of getting the HD audio, other than HDMI. They did this for people like you, that have older receivers, so you can enjoy the HD audio. The players with these outputs cost about $100 more than those that don't, but that's cheaper than buying another receiver. Blu ray players also have component outputs. If you get a player with the multi-channel analog outputs, just use the component outputs for video.

I've not heard of any receivers either that downconvert from HDMI to component. That would be going backwards for the new technology.

Hey,

Not sure if you found a solution yet. I've used HDMI to VGA converters (HDFury) and they work 100%. They tend to cost under $200 and they are just simple devices that always work. Projectors usually have VGA ports since many are used for presentations and so on.

Oops sorry, I just assumed they came with component outs too. My mistake.
Eh, at least I was right about some things. You're welcome... I think.

You're correct, plus you'd be able view upconverted standard def dvds. The issue isn't about your receiver converting the hdmi to component. That's what the converter does. I used such a device with my Sony 1080i RPTV to do exactly what you're doing before I replaced it with an hdmi capable LCD TV. Your connection would be: Blu-ray player to receiver via hdmi; receiver to converter via hdmi; and converter to projector via component. I still have it - PM me & for the cost of shipping, we can probably work something out.

The simplest approach is to run component video from the player to the projector and HDMI audio from the player to the receiver. AVRs do not convert HDMI inputs to component outputs because of copy protection.

You'll need to check the player manual to confirm that it will output Blu-ray component video at 720p or 1080i when the HDMI connection is active.

The component output of the player will be limited to 480p (also due to copy protection). But, the projector will do the upconversion. If your projector does a lousy job of upconverting, you might want to look into video processor. Otherwise, you'll be good to go.

I appreciate the response. Kind of a dead issue for me at this point though. Bought a new projector. Thank you though!

Your best solution without buying a new projector is to get a new receiver with multichannel inputs and a bluray player that has analog audio outputs for hd audio. You will have to connect the bluray to the receiver with component for video and analog audio cables to get the hd audio. No receiver will take hdmi to component, it would need a DAC for video. My suggestions for bluray players are the Oppo BD83 or the Pioneer 23fd. As far as receivers go, its up to your personal taste and your speaker selection.
