Japan Princess Mononoke (1997)

So, I was talking to a buddy from Finland and surprisingly Princess Mononoke just got released to theaters over there. It took it thirteen years to come out over there. I had originally seen the film on Starz back in like 2000 and really enjoyed it. I bought it on VHS soon after and got a DVD of it soon after. It's my favorite Miyazaki film.

I absolutely love this one!

I've only seen it once and that was some years ago too.
I still think back on it from time to time, pretty amazing for something I've only seen once...

Mononoke is definitely great. I think i like Howls and Spirited Away better though. I can't wait to line up a catalog of Miyazaki on blu-ray. Hopefully in fully lossless OLT audio.

I could care less about the sound. I have a 2 Channel set up so it doesn't bother me. I like having to speakers at the sides, one for each ear, lol. I thought the audio on Ponyo was fine.

Picture is what I care about most of all. The DVD for Princess Mononoke looks nice upconverted. I've watched it several times all ready.

Mononoke is one of my favorite animes of all time. Amazing film. What's best is that the film really has no villains in it.

I kinda felt that everyone was neutral in it. Eboshi wanted to kill the Forest Spirit, but helped women who were wh**es and the lepers. The animals/animal Gods wanted the forest to thrive and wipe out Eboshi and Iron Town. Ashitaka was wanting free of his curse and ended up pissing in everyone's Wheaties. He wasn't bad, but he was all over the place.

My favorite anime! Words alone can't describe it.

John DiMaggio is the only reason why I enjoy the English dub. Because his tone is like Bender's from Futurama on it. Except when he's Bender, he's not as serious.

Mine would be Akira, one of the best movies made, not anime alone!

Mononoke ended up (and not on purpose )being the FIRST Miyazaki movie that a lot of people saw and conscious of an actual name directing it, instead of a whole country.
(Some liked Kiki on VHS, and there were good reviews for Totoro, but nobody knew, back then, you see.)

As a result, we have a lot of first-time anime converts who think think PM and Spirited Away invented anime in America, and assume Howl's was the third movie Miyazaki ever made.
With the new releases of his old films to cash in on Ponyo, it's a good chance to go back and see why more experienced fans consider Mononoke....a bit of an embarrassment that everyone had to see it first, when they could've started with the more "normal" Spirited Away.

Believe me, I've known he was around in the early 90's. I've seen Warriors of the Wind. My uncle had it on VHS, I'm not sure if he still does or not. And we have the FOX/Troma DVD of My Neighbor Totoro.

Oh come on, relax. No need to sound so elitist. I was living in Japan when I first heard of Miyazaki and saw each and every one of his films while there - I was actually recommended Totoro first and then I saw Sen to Chihiro and after that Mononoke. Still my favorite of his. Granted I'm not a huge anime buff; I just like the story and the action sequences the most of any Miyazaki movie. It's no embarassment.

Still, you can't envy Disney for thinking they were going to get something to follow up the Kiki VHS and then getting this to put in theaters...

Spirited would've been an easier artistic transition if it'd been a year later, but Tokuma put the PM theatrical release in the contract.

I used to have a copy of Castle Of Cagliostro on DVD but someone took it

I started off watching Ranma and DBZ way back when. Ranma 1/2 was so awesome.

I think a lot of kids from the late 90's discovered Pokemon first, then Princess Mononoke.

There was a new copy of Castle of Cagliostro release like a couple of years ago that came with a slipcover and digitally remastered. The only problem I have with it is that it's a flipper disc with the extras on the back side.

Anime is plural and singular. Disliked this movie when I saw it, may give it a second chance on blu-ray.
