Default Workout 'Phones

I could have sworn I already posted this, but could not find it anywhere.

Anyway, I think my current Philips/Nike Around the Ear 'phones are on their last leg. The right ear piece is crackling and cutting in and out during use. After three years, I'm quite pleased with their performance. The biggest issue I had was fit. Other then the around the ear "hook," the ear piece was basically a stock iPod ear piece. If it wasn't for the "hook" these would never have worked for me.

The stock iPod ones have never fit in my ear. They either hurt and dug in, or just didn't sit well. Either way, after a few seconds on the treadmill, they are falling out.

I'm looking for something that sounds good, feels comfortable, and can take a beating. I would use these primarily for for treadmill/track use (typically at least 3 miles at a time), so they would need to withstand sweat and vibrations. I also lift some weights, but for the most part, this part of my work out is not my biggest concern.

I'm not sure if another around the ear concept is best or something more along the in-ear style. I don't think over the head would be good at all based on my usage. Also, I'm not sure of a budget. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars but would consider anything up to $100, I guess.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. All suggestions will be taken into strong consideration.

I own a pair of Shures that work great. I use them for working out and riding my harley, they're very comfortable since they come with 3 or 4 different types of replaceable ear buds.

Which model do you have? I just looked and they have a boatload of options.

Also, how do they sound? Does it have decent sounding bass? Are they clear or do they seem muffled?

I believe the SE110 maybe? i'll have to look once I get off work. My roommate has the monster beats by dre and they have more bass, the shures are very clear. they're prob 2 years old so I would recommend checking out some of their newer styles, since im not sure if they still make mine.

I've got the Skullcandy Titan's, and they're great for the price. Fantastic sound, awesome bass, replaceable earpieces, metal housing, in-line volume control. I use them when I run to the gym too.

Well, I tried the V-Moda "Bass Freq" model ($26) and they suck! I should not have went for the cheap.

I don't like the fit. I don't like the sound. Don't care for the quality of the cable.

Off to try my next one. I need some more research, but I have narrowed them down to:

V-Moda Vibe Duo -- $40
Sony EX-300 -- $48
Sennheiser MM50iP -- $50
Sennheiser CX300 -- $52
Shure SE115 -- $76
Etymotic Research ER6i -- $80
Shure SE420 -- $193

I'm not sure if I want to work my way up in price or just research and compare then make a decision.

I can vouch for the Etymotic Research ER6i's( https://forum.blu-ray.com/3091576-post2.html ). They sound awesome ! When properly inserted, they have decent bass too. Out of your choices, I'd also look at Shure. Both of these companies are very good at making affordable excellent sounding in ear monitors.

Not sure how many use Test Freaks for their reviews, but the seem pretty good and have seem them referenced in a few places.

Anyway, I added their rank to the chart.

12 -- Denon AH-C710 -- $100
49 -- Shure SE420 -- $193
74 -- Sennheiser CX300 -- $52
92 -- V-Moda Vibe Duo -- $40
189 -- Sony EX-300 -- $48
277 -- Shure SE115 -- $76
814 -- Sennheiser MM50iP -- $50
1263 -- Etymotic Research ER6i -- $80

Now I need to see why each placed where they did. Very interesting to see some as low as they are. BTW, these are ranked out of 3945 headphones. These include in-ear and over-ear designs. The Senneiser HD650 ranked #1 on their site.

I have the Sennheiser MX 85 Sport II Earbuds and they don't go anywhere once they're in. They took some getting use to, but once you learn the easy way of getting them in, you're golden.

The only bad thing I find with them is that the wire from ipod to headphone is a little "tacky" and catches on clothing, though not enough to pull out of your ear.

I use a set of these Motorokr's and love them. If you look at these stay away from the regular S9 and look at the S9-HD's the S9's have issues with connecting to your source.

Best Buy has these for $29. Just wish they had them in stores. I'm sold!

Hey, everyone.

I got the Denon AH-C710 IEM's. They were down to $98.99 at BB. Everyplace online was between $130-150.

Out of the box they were very treble heavy. Piercingly so. I've been breaking them in hoping they tame down some... Okay, A LOT! They are a completely different sound from my Denon D2000's at this point. A few reviewers that had a similar experience as I have said after some break in they were worlds better (one said 30-40 hours another said 100 hours ).

I used them last night and they sounded good with the Steve Jobs keynote, but nothing with music yet. One thing I noticed is that they were not noise canceling. I could hear my wife talking on the phone near me (about 15 feet away). I'll have to try these at the gym and see how much that bothers me. I'm really hoping I find a pair I want to keep.

The earphones have been burned in with probably 40-50 hours and they sound REALLY good. The treble really tamed down. It has good solid bass, tight midrange, and even highs.

I'm really happy with these. They feel and sound great, too.

The final test will be later this week when I finally get to the gym. I'm hoping they stay in place in my ears once I start sweating a bit.

I'll update again once I have gone to the gym a a couple times. Probably Sunday or Monday.

I run anywhere from 3-5 miles a day, I do not like slippery earbuds at all. Once I get a sweat going they come right out. I use the Adidas PMX 680, they are not audiophile headphones by any means, but, they stay in and thats all that matters to me when I'm running.

I go through a ton of earbuds because I'm tough on them and wear them when I sleep. I generally don't go high end but I got to say that for bang for buck nothing has come close to Sony Mdr-As40Ex . They cost $28.50 on Amazon so even if they only last you for like a year it's worth it (my look like they been used for 5 years since I sleep with them). I recently bought some Shure SCL2 headphones and I honestly like my old Sonys better. But one bit of advice. Once you figure our your size earbud tip. Put the smallest dab of super clue at the base of the earbuds where the ear tips rest. Lost many of ear tips from them coming off. Super glue does the trick. But the glue doesn't hold them on indefinitely so don't tug on them too hard or it'll come off still.

For working out they are pretty good. I sweat a lot so after about 30mins I find my self pushing them in once every 5-10 mins to get a good seal so the bass sounds good.

have you tried the pl30? They come with various tips and an around the ear piece for working out. Had mine for about three months so far so good. My kid has had hers go through the wash three times and no issues.
