Oh I hope he;s right! That would really make my day to see 2 studios go Blu-ray exclusive as a response to this.

Actually Paramount's press release is wrong in that final sentence.

Quote:
Today's announcement does not include films directed by Steven Spielberg as his films are not exclusive to either format.
CE3K is exclusive to BD. The reason why they put that in is because they can't force him to release his films in any format until he's ready.

I really think that once the dust clears people will see the Paramount announcemnt for what it really is...a pay off.

There might be a lot behind the announcement by the Universal guy Kornblau wanting the format war to continue. He probably was already aware of this announcement when he had his interview.

All in all, this could have bad/good implications for consumers. The bad being that it prolongs the format war, where the good being that it continues to bring the hardware prices down.

I still believe that most of Hollywood see's Blu ray as the better format and that it will win in the end. Look at Spielberg, he sees it and you can bet that other directors do as well! It is unfortunate that Paramount has let money dictate their decision but some studios need the money. Re-read the articles when the smoke clears you will see that.

Keep up the faith. If you chose Blu remain true! Don't be a bandwagon jumper and jump ship from this announcement!

This is likely very true but you do realize that Sony has very likely done the same thing in the past with some of the studios on its side.

I'm not saying it's right - all I am saying it that it isn't just one side doing this.

People realize that now. It doesn't change the fact that we won't be able to get Paramount titles for Blu-ray.

Bottom line. If you're an HD media fan with Blu-ray, what does this announcement do to you?

For sure this is going to hurt HDM adoption this Xmas. Microsoft has succeeded in screwing us all.

The HD DVD fanbois will rejoice for their reprieve. But, it's seriously harmed the chances of HD discs becoming pre-eminent. Just as Microsoft wanted.

I don't think it's quite the same. The fact is that Blu-ray is a superior format that supports superior data handling and capacity. No money changing hands is going to alter that fact, and studio execs know it. The question is whether they want to deliver the best product into the hands of customers.

Your point is well taken. Let me leave you with this...if we let our lives be lead by the what ifs, then you will never be able to move forward. If you like something and believe in something, and see its potential even if you can't see the ending, go for it, support it, invest in it.

I am just curious, what has Paramount brought to the table for blu ray? What have they brought to the table for HD DVD?

If you investigate this, I am guessing that you will probably see that they have had more support for the HD DVD camp then they have for Blu ray. It really hasn't helped them.

Specifically, the target was Dreamworks:
Dreamworks has been facing a crunch lately, with its live-action company starting to orphan its Animation division, making them VERY easy for someone with deep pockets to bribe...
Does it help any that Jeffrey Katzenberg is out front raising the banner for DWA--and their Shrek corporate icon--on HD, seeing how much personal lifelong mortal rival Disney has become the most identified studio force for Blu?

Microsoft could reach Paramount most directly through Viacom, as there'd already been some ties there back to the first DWA movies.
But--as Bill Hunt points out--some increasing industry analysis of where any deals came from might harm HD's "Antitrust lawsuit against Blu" case just a tad...

Dreamworks Music was the first to go. Then Dreamworks Animation. Finally Dreamworks SKG.

Spielberg is not a happy man. Universal screwed him over and now Paramount pulled this stunt.

My biggest concern is, if this is a Microsoft payoff, and that is the strategy, what's to stop them from buying Warner and other studios as well? This is a high stakes battle, with the winner taking in billions...so what's $150 million in the short run? Buy a couple more big exclusive studios and we're stuck with Sony only titles - a complete 180 degree turn from a month ago.

I hate to tell you guys but objectively coming from someone who would still largely like BD to win, Bill's tirade today came off as amateurish, childish and unprofessional. I know a lot of people even in the BD camp that were laughing their assess off at that "blog" today.

Fuad, I am guessing they meant Pareamount titles. As in we are exclusive with HD DVD except for all movies where the directors ask us for BD

Sounds like a dictatorship or monopoly. Hopefully that doesn't fly in the Land of The Free!
