I thought Fearless was the one that he said would be his last. not sure though. I heard this movie is more of a drama than a martial arts movie.

I'm pretty excited for this. I was definitely planning on picking it up. I saw a preview for this movie some months ago and have been waiting for it ever since.

This isn't a martial arts film.

I have the import from HK(if the US disc is of similar quality then you shouldn't be disappointed). Jet Li, Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Andy Lau star as blood-brothers bound in a rebellion against the Taiping. Jet Li is a former general seeking revenge for his slaughtered troops, while Kaneshiro and Lau are bandits who strive to protect their village from Imperial troops. While there are some entertaining action sequences and large scale battles, the heart of the story revolves around the three "warlords" and specifically the love triangle between two of them and the beautiful Jinglei Xu.

The film is very good, but I found that it never settled into a consistent storytelling arc.

Agreed. I purchased the UK blu-ray version(pretty cheaply after renting the DVD) and while I enjoy it I also feel that it kind of arcs almost earlier than expected and then tries to "re-arc" if that make sense. Its a solid film though if you like this style of movie and the three leads are very good in it.

Its well worth at least a rental if you are unsure. Im not a blind-buyer so I cant recommend that!

I think the quote was something along the lines of it being his last "wushu epic". This looks more along the lines of a historical battle epic moreso then about the different Chinese schools of martial arts.

I liked this movie, but it sure took a long time for it to be released in North America. I feel like I imported the HK Blu-ray a couple of years ago.

I saw this ON Demand before it hit theaters (here) and will get it on BRD eventually.

I'd call this more of a period piece than a strict MA movie.
The battle planning was great.

You bet!

Probably day one release if I can.

I did a blind buy for Red Cliff and saw the preview of Warlords and was hooked right then and there!

If it is even half as good as Red Cliff I will be a happy camper indeed!

Well, when I said "his last martial arts film" I was using that term loosely...what I meant was last "asian-style epic". But I guess that's not what Jet-Li meant.

Well anyway, I do like these Asian war dramas. I couple good ones that I wish would hit BD is the Korean film "Musa: The Warrior" and some more of those Dragon Dynasty titles of the same genre.

When the term "wushu/wuxia epic" is used, think "Once Upon A Time In China"

I thought it was good but there's just something missing that I can't put my hands on.

Right, Jet Li was going to focus strictly on romantic comedies. Fearless wasn't an "asian-style epic" either, whatever that means.

Good acting and script? China really only has a handful of well-known actors that are repeatedly stuffed down people's throats and none of them really can act.

I totally disagree. Takeshi Kaneshiro, while totally underused in this film, was fantastic in Red Cliff. You must be watching the wrong movies. Anyway, I thought The Warlords was a great film. The first 45 minutes or so aren't very impressive, but it picks up dramatically after that.

Is it going to be uncut?

I did some searching ... one guy says the HK disc is uncut and the UK, cut. The UK version is listed here as 126 min but listed at amazon.uk as 108 min. The US version is listed as like 112 min on amazon.

That's confused me too. I really want to buy the US release later this month but I'd like to know the proper running time.
Of course I'm buying this since I considered both RED CLIFF: Parts I & II the best John Woo film he's ever made. Of course which went beyond my expectations of everyone mentioning just how great it was.
