Rumor: Toshiba to Admit $150M Payoff - Blu-ray Forum

We have received word from a reliable source that Toshiba is going to admit that they were the source of the $150M pay-off to Paramount for exclusive support of their HD DVD format.

It is all about honour in Japan. This was not an honourable move, so heads in Toshiba are going to roll.

I guarantee that their "press release" is going to read exactly like an Amir AVS post. I hope the BDA is prepared to respond to the nonsense it will contain.

Yeah, but I thought this was done via someone NOT part of the HD-DVD group?

Unfortunately, it's all about bribery in Japan, too--Their execs get away with what would make our execs blush, but a quick public apology and job-reshuffling later, and it's back to business again.
But as this's ToshibaUS we're talking about, not sure whether that would enter into it.

Just so long as it hits the papers in print over here, and the Undecided articles can stop saying "Gosh, Paramount must've chosen the superior technology!...Looks like the War will go on two more years till the public decides or wants downloads!"

I'm sure it was all done by the narrowest techinicality within laws...ethics be damned, of course.

I wonder what kind of fallout we can expect if this ends up being confirmed?

That's the part I think becomes interesting. There's a credibility issue coming up if this all comes out in the wash since they did indeed deny it publicly several times over.

Well, they also deny the fact that the ps3 is a blu-ray player and that gamers buy movies so this would not surprise me at all.
