I really hope an eventual release includes 24-bit lossless audio of both the movie and album versions of the soundtrack. (Actually, the album version sound a bit like flat digital recordings of the day and may only be 16-bit at the source).
Frank Oz's commentary on the DVD was great, and I hope they bump up that track to 768kb/sec DTS like HBO has done with their commentary tracks. |

Here's the alternate ending, split into 3 parts:

We might see it after Geffen passes. Yes, I'm serious.
He was against the DVD having the footage, which is why he had it recalled. I've heard/read that had no intention of the footage ever being seen again since the test screening, but (thankfully) someone let it go on the DVD without Geffen's knowledge. |

I LOVE this film. The reason it was recalled was because Geffen was the distributor, and must sign off on releases of the film. Warner neglected to contact him and attain the neccesary permission to release both the disc and the alternate ending. Geffen consented to a later DVD release of the film, but as part of his agreement, stated that the film's alternate ending should only be presented in a final form, not as a rough black and white version. Geffen pushed Warner to put money into finishing the effects for the ending, but Warner has yet to invest the money to do so. I would assume that it could happen for the film's 25th anniversary which is next year, possibly with a limited theatrical re-release, or just a special edition Blu-ray/DVD. (More likely.) The film has a restored 1080p master made in 2007 (with the theatrical ending) which has been available on AppleTV and the Sony PSNetwork (albeit in 720p) however, the transfer for the film is incorrectly framed with too much information revealed on top, and too much cropped on the bottom. Since the film was shot open matte, it's likely an error that will be corrected for the eventual Blu-ray release. The last time thedigitalbits interviewed Warner about the title they said there were no immediate plans for the title, but that they would be interested in releasing the title in the future...this was almost one year ago if memory serves me right.
