Default Great expectations ...

Picked up a PS3 last week along with The Departed and Casino Royale. Haven't had a chance to even open the PS3 box, but planning an install for this weekend. I have a 60 inch Sony SXRD set. Unfortunately, my surround system can't be upgraded just yet so I'm stuck with a non-HDMI receiver for now.

So here's the thing - I have NEVER seen a BD or HD-DVD movie. Not even an in-store display. Best I've seen is an upconverted SD-DVD and HD via Cox cable. Yeah, I know ... pathetic ... a true HD virgin. So be gentle! I want my first time to be an eye-popping, life-altering, can't believe what I'm seeing moment. Hope my expectations aren't too high.

So what was your reaction when seeing BD for the first time. Evolutionary or revolutionary? Incremental or exponential? Unfortunately, there is only one first time ever, and mine is imminent ...

Honestly? "... Meh..." But that was because my first HD film was The Last Samurai on HD-DVD. Sure it was sharper, but the audio hadn't improved much (Dolby Digital-Plus my @$$) and yeah... But now I see better titles (like Casino Royale, Pirates of the Caribbean, even the latest fox releases) and I am like "Holy crap, this is what I've wanted".

Welcome Beast.

My first was Monster House. I was very excited to see it in blu because this movie really was a pleasant surprize for me. But having seen HDTV for so long it took some of the edge off. Loved Ghost Rider, my 2nd, BD.

So far every movie has been a great viewing experience. The 5th Element blew me away the most for content and picture because I have never seen more than 15 minutes of film in pieces.

However, I am most impressed with "Planet Earth". If you see thousands of birds or bats in a movie, you go wow ... but, eh... you know it is CGI and a sound track. When you see it on "PE" and realize that nature is astoundingly HUGE and beautiful, you want to thank God for the good earth. Absolutely the most amazing thing you could watch in your life.

you only have casino royale and the departed right?

I would watch casino royale first. It is better of the two when it comes to PQ. You will be blown away if you have never seen HiDef before. I am fully confident that tomorrow you will go buy a minimum 3 more BD once you watch these two.

Just wanted to welcome you to the Blu-community!

And yes, the first impression is indeed a marvelous experience.

Others will likely disagree but I see HD cable and HD movies on disc as being somewhat comparable in quality.

The disc does have better quality and the sound is far superior through the proper equipment. Still the UNI HD channel looks pretty good to me.

Monster House was also my first. Pretty amazing. On the contrary, I thought it blew even HD Cable away. You are going to love it. Casino Royale is a great way to show off Blu's capabilities. Also, as some others have said, the Pirates movies really do the trick. It is my opinion that Disney puts out the best quality Blu as a whole. The one movie that really made me sigh and say, "I am forever Blu" was "The Prestige". My roomate came home and saw an ok movie....but couldnt quite recommend it. I brought it home 3 days later on Blu and he said that the movie was a totally different experience.
