Its not that good a deal. $2500 - $3000 TV is hardly cheap when you consider most of the HD-DVD fanboys are always saying that BD players are so expensive.

Ha, they are selling so poorly they have to GIVE them away! LMBO

I think a lot of people will just sell them on ebay to get some money back for blu-ray.

You will see lots of this. Currently you get 9 movies with purchase of Toshiba HD DVD player at Best Buy. The hardware and software will be given away at a alarming rate.

Because,.. by the first of the year, you won't be able to sucker anyone into buying into HD DVD and they don't want to have to pay to recycle the stuff.

You can't throw the unsold HD DVD players in the dumpster out back even if that's where they belong.

A HD DVD player will rejoice as the prices of players dives to $199 and lower, claiming this will result in mass adoption but in fact the prices fall because the value of the hardware is falling too. If they could sell these for higher prices,.. they would.

let's have have a poll after spending $2000 - $3000 on a large HDTV, do you want to watch movies using the cheaper format, or do you what to make that TV do what it was designed to to do, that being giving you the best image you hope to see for years to come...

I'd love to hear the BB employee explain why after spending that kinda cash you only get HD-DVD :P

Default It's all about selection

What I find funny about this is how the hd-dvd camp has to give away players when they don't have many players to give away. I went on amazon.com and found that (not including the combo-players) blu-ray has 14 to 2 hd-dvd players currently for sale. I think what the hd-dvd camp is forgetting is that we are consumers. Heck, I just bought a blu-ray player and am already looking to get the new hdmi1.3a players that are coming out in the next month so I can upgrade my home theater. HD-dvd just can't win, no matter how much they try to bribe studios, or give away their players. Sony doesn't have to resort to such tactics. I would love to see the consumer reaction if Best Buy put up side-by-side displays of all of the next generation players. Blu-ray would win hands down, simply due to capitalism and the fact that we as Americans want selection. The want to see that they have a choice of 14 (and even more coming) different models to chose from and most of the time they will buy the best one they can get. Heck, Sony's players on their website alone range from $400 to $1200. That gives guys like me a chance to either be safe and get a cheap player and the high-end consumer the opportunity to own the best. My advise, give it up HD-DVD, you just can't win. Learn from the past, the store with the more toys wins.

Why, HDMI 1.3 is nothing but a ploy to sell more cables. Any and every HDMI is 1.3.

this is a slick attempt to bloister their inhouse standalone hardware "sales" and ^^ true... artificially inflating their attach ratios to boot!!

In Canada any Samsung TV over 46" gets a free bluray player at BB.

Theres also a deal at Futureshop here: 40" Sony LCD, PS3, 5.1 Sony HTIB, 3 Movies, 2 games (+5 mail in movies) for $2500

But that is Part of "Sony Days" Where just about everything made by sony is on sale, its actually a really great sale, even games and movies are reduced in price.

While I tend to believe it as mostly marketing B.S. I also know the cable can make a difference.

The thickness of the cable indicates how much bandwidth it can carry and on how many channels at maximum load. Maybe people get by on cheaper cables because they aren't using the full bandwidth. But once you do, the signal gets scewed and can impact signal performance. Maybe they are a mm thicker and therefore the right cable for HDMI 1.3

Short of cutting both type of cables to measure the thickness of the bare wire, we need to find industry specs for such things, or have an insider tell us the truth.

Don't worry about attach rates at all,...

The attach rates matter is pure unfiltered HD DUD FUD at it's finest.
