United Kingdom Flying Monsters with David Attenborough 3D Blu-ray (2011) [Region Free] [uncut in UK]

Flying Monsters 3D was released on 3D Blu-ray in the UK. There are other 3D releases (e.g. in the US and Australia) but these have been shortened to 40 minutes, while the uncut UK edition runs to 70 minutes. Please note that though the UK edition is REGION FREE and will play everywhere, the special features are in 1080i so may not work on some players.

Original post:
I just have one question; why can't I find Sir David Attenborough's excellent film, 'Flying Monsters' on this normally brilliant site. After all, it is due out this coming Monday(7th of November) and I've just received an e-mail from Play.com to tell me that it's on its way.

So why can't I find it on this site? I would like to add it to my current list of 3D movies.

Can anyone help with this? Have I missed something on this site?

John.

Actually it's a fascinating documentary and Sir David gives a quite coherent narration on the whole subject of the Plieosaurs(I think that's what they're called). Here in the UK Sky's 3D channel show it regularly and, on seeing it, and knowing it was about to be released over here, I decided to get it. It's due out here in the UK this coming Monday, the 7th of November.

One thing surprised me--the wingspan of the 'Flying Monster' was the equivalent size of a modern-day jet fighter. And wait until you see the bone that gets shown to Sir David. Awesome! I can't wait to see it again!

John.

Well, I just went to https://www.blu-ray.com (for some reason I get errors when I'm on one of the forum pages), and started typing in the large white box at the top. Make sure it's not set on a specific country (flag on the right side of the box), but on the 'world globe'. Does that work with you also?

If you hit the Amazon-link, you'll see that it is a Blu-ray 3D version.

I've never used the world globe(until today, that is), just concentrating on the UK(or the US) flag. So, thank you for that gekke; I'll remember that in the future. John.

I'm excited about this one too - I started a thread about it back in July, but it never went anywhere - LOL:

Flying Monsters Blu-ray 3D has been up for pre-orders over at amazon.co.uk for a while now. The street date is Nov 07, 2011 (UK)

It's coming via 2 Entertain Video who often release region free discs, so this may be one that folks in the USA want to keep an eye on, since no US announcement has been made.

It's narrated by good ol' David Attenborough (Planet Earth, Life, etc. etc ) and is the first 3D film to be awarded a BAFTA

Amazon.co.uk has tentative art up now:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Flying-Monst...dp/B005DE09FY/

Here is the theatrical website:
http://www.flyingmonsters3dmovie.com/

It didn't play near me - but I was "this close" to seeing it when I was last in London... anyone here see it?

Got it this morning and, in a nutshell, it's absolutely brilliant! Sir David's narration is excellent and intelligent. The occassional flights of fancy in the narrative provide humour but also show just how large some of the creatures might actually have been when compared to humans. All in all a great package and, despite what others have reported, the running time is quite generous at 70 minutes. Buy it!

I'm sorry Jbug but I'm afraid I'm unable to tell you. There's absolutely no information on the box that I got that says one thing or another. As a rough guess I'd say it's region-free but that is only a guess. My suggestion is to look elsewhere.

The back cover indeed doesn't mention anything, which 'should' mean that it is region-free; otherwise they are 'supposed' to indicate the restriction. However, nothing is certain, and the disc isn't mentioned yet on http://bluray.liesinc.net either.

John, could you maybe add your short review here: User reviews - Flying Monsters ?

United Kingdom My impression...

The 3D is very impressive. A great many of the side shots of the larger pterosaurs threatened to take your eye out, they were that good.

If I had to pick out one scene that stood out from the rest--very difficult indeed!--it was during an interview with an expert at his home(can't remember the guy's name unfortunately). This expert and David are sitting at a table discussing these large pterosaurs then the guy bends down and picks up a bone and tells David its an arm bone(the equivalent of our own from elbow to shoulder). It was massive! Now I haven't watched it in 2D but I doubt you'd be able to get an accurate impression when viewed flat but, in 3D, every nuance of the bone is brought to the fore. Truly awesome!

I really cannot get over this 70 minute film. In the accompanying(2D) documentary the narrator tells us the crew only had 9 months to make it. That and having to film it for 3 different media(TV, cinema and IMAX) made the task very time-consuming.

I'm so impressed with it I'll be watching the movie again at the weekend. I rarely watch documentaries more than one a month(except when checking a new disc out, that is) but I'm going to make an exception in this case.

Everything I've said is the honest truth as I see it. So, once again, I must repeat myself and say, buy it! You'll not regret it one iota.

John.

Managed to pick this up from UK Best Buy in their clearance sale. I had ordered it from Choices UK online and the numpties sent me the DVD instead. Bah!

Well, what can I say .. and I appear to be in the minority here .. but I really really didn't like it! I normally love Attenburgh docs, but this was just plain boring and uninspiring. Also, I thought the 3D was sadly woeful. Very few of the scenes had any really good depth ... it just appeared to be flat in most scenes. Oh, and I don't know why, but a lot of the scenes appeared to have a milky hue to the them, making a lot of the 3D look soft. I just didn't like it much. It's not a keeper for me .. will be on ebay shortly.

Sorry guys
