Is there any difference in auidio and video quality between the theatrical and extended editions?
Since the movies are on two discs, there must be less compression artifacts right? What about the audio? Is the discrete 6.1 better than the 5.1 ES Matrix? I bought the Lotr theatrical editions for 70$ a month before the extended versions were announced. I'm considering buying the extended versions. |

Extended versions are far superior, especially for Fellowship of the Ring, aside from some controversy about green tint/color grading/brightness. I suspect you won't even notice, so I'd say sell the theatricals off and buy the extendeds as soon as you are able.

You got ripped off there, you have been able to get the Theatrical Trilogy on BD over here for about $25
Anyway back to your question, the biggest difference is the Exented Edition of Fellowship as it had a brand new master made and is far superior to the theatrical version BD. |

I have watched both cuts of all three films as I found the theatricals for $4 each at Blockbuster and I couldn't tell a difference in audio. There is however a noticeable difference in PQ as the extended versions have much better fine detail and color saturation.
