So I recently got Battlefield 3 on the Spring Sale for $30. Great price for a game that has all these gamer's choice awards and all, and I love my shooters.
Even before it released in October, I was aware it was NOT going to be on Steam, rather exclusive to Origin (just like Mass Effect 3, just after I bought 1 and 2 on Steam for $5). This was an immediate turn off, but I decided to install Origin to give it a shot and see what the BETA was like. WOW. Completely terrible. I launch game from Origin, and it opens Google Chrome; REALLY? Play a game off my browser? You can't show my my rank progress from the game just like BFBC2 and others? Definitely an Origin thing, I hear; only game on account is BF3, so clarify if it's just BF3, then. Also, I go into options to turn up settings and enable full screen, because I saw it was windowed, and even after clicking full screen, still a window! A bunch of hiccups I blamed Origin for everything, and only blamed it as a BETA I was wishing would come to Steam as a final product later on down the line. Well behold, nearly 6 months after release, no news of it to Steam and Origin has it on sale. I decided to go against my "boycott" of Origin for taking 2 franchises I love to play casually, or when I have more time in depth, and making it exclusive to their new shitty DDS (digital distribution service, ala Steam). So I wait about 2 hours to install once I buy it, and then play game. It wasn't the BETA, but again, Origin booting up Google Chrome to launch game and select servers from browser, and instantly SPAMMED with bloatware "needed to play the game"-- What the ****?! I paid $30 for this game (I feel bad for those who paid $60), and you want me to wait longer to install shit bloatware EVERY server?! And as if that wasn't enough, when I finally quick match something to shoot somebody, the first words I hear are from soem chubby sounding gamer, "Man, this game is dead now. Not nearly as active as it was." Press tab to pull up scoreboard and teams... 7 people in the server. -_____- And then for the game itself, no doubt attributed to Origin, is vacant as hell, I have to run (unlimited stamina, btw; so much for "most realistic shooter") over 500m to my "defend this point" style map and aiming down the sights you have to hold down the RMB and shoot with LMB; I prefer to click down RMB and have it stay aiming down the sights so I don't have to awkwardly fumble with maybe letting middle finger slip off and go out of aiming down sights. Biggest waste of $30 I've ever spent, and Origin is the absolute worst, bootleg, knock off version of the already great (not perfect, but still amazing) Steam. EA is greedy, and if they continue to do this exclusive, not on Steam shit, I won't buy the games-- Even if they're $5! IDGAF! TL;DR version: Origin is terrible, and I'm going back to gaming on Steam where it's active servers in every game I've played online. |

First thing I want to say that when Steam first came out, it was a trainwreck, with it's only existence was to kill off WON (World Oppenent Network) and was one of the first examples by using Half Life 2 as the poster boy for DNR everyone is revolting against (no used games).
I actually thought Origin was very underutilized for Battlefield 3. The browser definitely needed to get used to with the real problem being your setting can only be access during gameplay (a terrible design choice), as is your friend's list in Origin is separate in Battlelog, but otherwise it really isn't a bad idea at all, but I wouldn't point the finger directly at Origin, more at battlelog. Being the only thing I used Origin was to play BF3, I would have preferred the game to have been ported to steam, and it's pretty clear EA didn't put much faith in Origin for the design choices. That doesn't mean Origin is a horrible service (it is free), in fact I had a much worse time getting my game to work without the fear of it crashing (I have used a low end PC for, but I plan on building a new Computer in the near future). I think Origin is just facing the growing pains of being something that is new, just like steam was when it came out, where similar horror stories are preached out. From the 8 million accounts made in Origin as well as the reported 100,000 on Battlefield and the millions on Star Wars: The Old Republic, it's here to stay and it's going to be good. However, I'd still prefer using Steam for my games as I rather there be one game client rather than multiple ones. Last edited by Trogdor2010; 03-29-2012 at 06:33 AM. |

The Web interface is a DICE thing... not an Origin thing.
You can not play BF3 without 1st accessing the game on battlelog, which will launch in your default browers. DICE and is very proud of their battlelog feature for BF3 and this is entirely a DICE thing, not an Origin thing. Also, the auto launch on BF3 always puts you in an empty server... least it does to me. Again, this is DICE issue (programming error), not an origin issue, and can be resolved by browsing the servers 1st and not selecting the auto-join button on your battlelog. Hopes it helps. |

Thanks for the input and insight, guys!
For the mouse settings, I switch the sensitivity just fine, and actually really like how you can change the FOV on the fly, along with multiple other tweaks. The only thing I didn't notice-- maybe overlooked it -- is how to just click RMB once to stay in the mode of aiming down the sights, rather than having to hold it down and if I let slip mid-sights, it goes out and turns to hip fire which is less accurate. If there's an option to fix that, I'd like it better. Good to know that it's DICE's choice for the dumb browser Battlelog, but with that said, it almost doesn't make sense as to why they wouldn't release on Steam, IMO. Unless DICE is part of EA, why would they make it exclusive to Origin (a choice by EA, I'm pretty sure), but opt to not have enough faith in origin to handle logging of XP earned and rankings through the client itself; much like does in game and through it's community where I can track hours played, to something as advanced as how many bullets I shot of every single gun, how many bullets hit a zombie (L4D2) and etc? It seems easier to do it through the client, so why not either have faith in Origin, or make it available on Steam, too? I'm sure this thing was before the Origin-exclusive deal was announced, but shortly after BF3 came out, someone found a .ini file on someone close to EA or DICE's computer that had a parameter line saying something that insinuated files trying to work with Steam. Again, even if true, I'm sure this is before they went Origin only, but I would love for this, along with other games like Mass Effect 3, and maybe even SWKOTOR to come over. Even if they have to take a percentage loss on each sale or whatever, the community of Steam is thirsty for those games. I just bought both Mass Effect's on PC because I prefer that type of game on mouse and keyboard, and AFTER I trade in my Xbox copies of each after getting the PC ones for $5 each, they announce that another game is Origin only: Mass Effect 3! As a consumer, I feel like these choices by EA are screwing me, and plenty of others who already own these franchises on other platforms or other DDS services, and now feel forced to buy into something we don't need, and after trying, don't want at all. They're royally ****ing me, and I refuse to buy anymore Origin exclusives, even if they turn Mass Effect 3 into a free to play game; I hate the layout and all THAT much. Anyways, that's just my opinion and experience, and my two cents. If DICE isn't part of EA/didn't really have a say in it's exclusivity to Origin, please correct me as I'm always willing to forgive if my previous opinions were based on false facts or assumptions. Hearing that Origin didn't plan on the Battlelog, now all that hate is directed at DICE for doing it, making me install all this bloatware, instead. Something that REALLY bugged me was an EA rep when they announced Mass Effect 3 was Origin exclusive in an IGN article, he was saying "we want a way to better connect to our customers rather than just have the initial sale", or something along those lines. Steam downloads any updates to my games automatically and lets me know "Steam has finished installing ____"; pretty much installing the updates. Anytime there's DLC, it installs and packs it together FOR me, making my life easier. I don't possess this high-horse attitude that I want to buy DLC for a base game from same client, then connect the files to play DLC from base game; that's probably not much work, but with video games, I want something fun, not time consuming taking away from that fun time. I could go on forever, but I won't just yet. Lol. |

I didn't read everything you wrote veritas, but I'm glad you got to vent. Battlelog was something different, and even I was like "this is gay!!!"....but after using it, it's actually awesome. I love it. Has all the stats and more the same way BF2 had it, with more detail and a better interface.
I think you were judging it to soon. There is no bloatware, I believe you are referring to the Battlelog Plugin, that needs to update periodically. While I do prefer Steam, origin isn't all that bad. |
