Default Copy protection hole in Blu-ray and HD DVD movies

http://www.heise-security.co.uk/news/75103

From the article:
Quote:
Computer magazine c't has discovered that the first software players running on Windows XP allow screenshots of the movies to be created in full resolution. To do so, you only need to press the Print key on your keyboard while the movie is running. Such a screenshot function could then be automated to produce copies of HD movies both from Blu-ray Discs and from HD DVDs picture by picture. As c't calculated, the performance of current PC systems is sufficient for a clean recording using this procedure. Once a pirate has all of the individual pictures, they can be put together to create a complete movie and mixed with the audio track that is grabbed separately.
Damn that was quick!

Yeah, but seriously, who is going to really do that?

They must think we want to steal this stuff pretty damn badly...

After all you could pause every frame and take a picture with a digital camera and make those pictures into a movie too...

Ooo Ooo another loophole!

I wonder how feasible this actually is though... Is there some type of automated way to do this? Or can holding down the print screen button yield 24 presses per second? Also, how easy it is going to be to get the audio off of the disc?

Of course it is automated! And even though a decode and encode is neccecary it's far far better than a picture of the screen!

Their are other obstacles though, - like 300.000 print-screen images at 1920x1080 takes up quite a lot of harddrive space!
I guess they have to compress it real-time, - or in small clips. But perhaps that's what's meant by:

The only way they are going to stop copying of the discs is if they require a 24/7 ethernet connection on the players themselves along with putting some sort of verfiable chip in the disc, so it can be verified as a real copy of the movie, for which I wont buy any player then. Thats just too much trouble to play a disc\watch a movie

Uh oh, better produce movies in shades of blue that are photocopy proof.

Dang, the trouble of ripping a movie frame-by-frame MIGHT be done by someone willing to prove it can be done. Rips the frames, store them, then rip the audio, then make sure they are aligned and SOMEHOW turn it into a movie which will probably not play back correctly.

..Dang, wouldn't you rather just pay the 15 bucks for the disc? It reminds me back in the EARLY days how software was developed and freely distributed by people on BBS's, or floppies. Many became angry when you had to buy it and piracy was born as a self fullfilling prophecy.

I think they do verify the disc, Not via internet, but thats part of the loading process as i understand it for HDDVD...if thats what "verifying content" means, checking for legitimacy? not sure.

Remember, it's up to €40 (King Kong for example) for a pretty new movie here in Belgium. I think it's a difference with €2 when you pirate one (using the internet, price is for the time/media/electricity and the wearing out of the computer).

...Brings back the price difference here in the EU with the rest of the world... Are we so much more fortunate? C'mon, we have an economic growth of ~2.3% for '06 compared to ~3.5% for the US ('05).

By the way, they should eliminate the source of piracy, not the end symptoms.

This wouldn't be hard to automate. I'm not surprised there is holes already. Any system can be broken its only a matter of time until the encryption on the discs is.
